Shew, boys, we basically struck out in Louisiana. Jay Malyon was the only one of our six anglers to catch a fish. Winds up to 25 mph and the marsh mostly churned to muck. I fed a sheepshead and didn’t strike hard enough; that was basically the day.

Really looking forward to polishing up my skills during carp season and getting back down to the inside of Highway 1 in Grand Isle in my Gheenoe though. We were fishing out of bigger skiffs way out in Hopedale.

Anyone know if there’s a boat launch on the inside of Grand Isle back towards Port Fourchon?

I had some buddies that launched out of Joe’s Landing in Barataria, LA. Not exactly where you are looking but easily accessible and they had pretty good luck. I would try to launch out of a marina rather than a public launch due to vehicle security.

Hey Zach, was that a guided trip? I’m trying to get some information for a future self guided trip and I’ve heard the Hopedale side is better for that.

Yes it was. Not the guides’ fault, but the fishing was absolutely atrocious. That was just conditions though. Unfortunately I can’t really comment on what it is “normally” like.

Yes I understand. I fished the Port Sulfur side at about this time a few years ago. Even with no wind the visibility was a little tough.

While I’ve never been to Louisiana I do fish weekly in my hometown of Jacksonville, FL on the same general latitude and also coastal redfish country. I would never advise anyone to choose January through April as a time for a fishing trip to the southeastern coast as this is the season with the most unpredictable weather. Although February and March are relatively predictable because they are windy more often than not. I often have my most prolific fishing during late winter through spring but this a one in every four trips success situation. If I had to choose a time to travel to Florida to fish it would be late April through early June or October through December. These are the months when fishing is most dependable. Fish are widespread and catchable rather than tightly schooled and spooky. Has anyone noticed similar trends in Louisiana?

Kenny that is exactly the information I was given once we were booked and down there, and exactly the OPPOSITE of what I was told when I reached out to the local shop last October to inquire into the best time to come. We weren’t super thrilled with a few aspects of how it worked out, even though the guys in the shop were very nice to us.

I can say for sure that on the Port Sulfur/Venice side, there were good numbers of big Reds this time of year. We caught numerous fish the largest being 29lb. I think it is a fewer numbers but bigger fish time of year. For what it’s worth have you seen the “Red Like Winter” DVD?

    Zach,

When I was a kid we would launch at a marina in Fourchon behind the Port right where LA 1 turns east towards Grand Isle; but we usually fished the marshes off Bayou Lafourche. It was pretty surreal taking a small bass boat through the port with the oil rigs and all the oil field boats towering over us.

Man thinking back I guess it has been almost 30 years since I fished that area. Makes me wonder what size those 5# speckled trout and 35# redfish I tell stories about catching actually were…

Zach, I’ve been in that situation before a few times in the Keys. Unfortunately even the most honest guide is going to exaggerate in the direction of better than the fishing really is. Then you get there and realize the only way you’re going to catch fish is with bait. This time of year in North Florida the guides always use bait. R Black I wonder if you just got lucky and hit it right, were the conditions good?

I have only taken the one trip down there. I don’t think it’s unusual. I took the trip with Tailwaters Fly Fishing Co. out of Dallas. They have had similar results many times. We had good weather but I don’t know how often that happens.

I fished the Texas gulf coast last year from mid October through early December and got my butt kicked most days.
