A couple of mates and I just had the most incredible trip to the Eucumbene River in Australia’s Snowy Mountains. We were there to fish the winter spawn run of brown trout, which had been under way for a number of weeks prior to our arrival.
A squirt of rain a few days before saw the river level rise and the fish run… We hit it just after the peak and enjoyed three and a half days of pulling the most incredibly coloured browns I have ever seen in Australia.
I used my Scott Radian #6 weight matched with an Australian made Harfin LR90R #5/6 fly reel loaded with a Scientific Anglers Steelhead taper floating line. The Steelhead taper was perfect for throwing weighted glo bug/nymph combinations with split shot, much more gracefully than I deserve but the rod had a lot to do with that as well!
Our group landed over 100 fish, and dropped about the same number between us..
We did the miles to find the fish with some spectacular scenery and a few of the locals coming right up to check us out.
Next year is already booked!
