They are striped bass right? Is this saltwater you are fishing in or do they survive in freshwater as well?

Spent a summer in Montauk working on party boats that was good fun catching some big stripers as well catching some nice fluke and blues.

    Jack –

Those are stripers; they are actually anadromous fish like salmon in some areas, and they can survive being stocked in fresh water. This was in the headwaters of a lake here in Georgia.

    Zach,

I’ve been fly fishing on the white river (Beaver Dam) this week and seen a lot of what I think may be schools of white bass travelling in groups of 10 or 15. They are all over the place right now. I’m not sure if they are white bass or not, but they look like little sharks.

If they are white bass, what type of flies do you recommend? I had many chase after brown/green/black marabou jigs, but only one hooked up and then got away as I was reeling him in. I also tried woolly buggers. I didn’t have any white marabou jigs or streamers or I would have tried them. I read white bass like white jigs a while back.

On the bright side, I have caught 3 trout. They like the really small midges (22 size). I haven’t had much luck with any bigger flies. I’m guessing it is because the water flow has been so slow. They haven’t been generating much this week from the Beaver.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Mike it’s late for the white bass run. Those could be buffalo carp. But theft to catch them with is a small clouser minnow. Congrats on the trout!

    Zach,

Thanks for the quick reply. I actually tried a white and green clouser but they didn’t go for it. Maybe it was to big.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Thanks for the camera work Zach!

2014 was a lost season of white bass for me, I think I might have caught 6 or so this spring, all small. The cold weather winter must have changed something, I did pretty good in 2013.

The striper season is starting much better!

The white river system the fly to use for white bass is chartreuse and anything clouser in a 6 hook size.. however it’d about 3-4 weeks removed now.. and for the most part you’ll have the most success with midges with 6-7x tippet…. Very tippet shy round here… and of course the ole trusty olive wooly bugger..
