The Itinerant AnglerRumors are starting to fly hot and heavy that Nikon is about to release a ~$1500 D600, which would purportedly have a 24MP full frame sensor as well as 1080p video recording (with an HDMI out, which is nice), plus a built in flash and the pro-grade magnesium alloy body and weather sealing.
In other words, this would be the camera I have been waiting 6 years to buy. The D200/D300 body would finally get an FX chip and a nice video upgrade, for the same old price point.
Pretty ideal for magazine work if true. I’ve been printing double-truck shots for years from my 10MP D200, but they’re a little softer than I’d like. I calculated a while back that true 17 X 8.5″ double truck at 225ppi (which is the actual pixel density of the hook and bullet press) comes out to about a 16MP camera, so this would overkill the biggest possible photos a magazine could print, giving you the ability to either move your shots around or to shoot in a cropped mode (which at 24MP is probably a good idea unless you own a server farm).

MemberThis might be what I have been waiting for. Been wanting to upgrade from a D90 for awhile and this looks like it has everything I want. I guess we just have to wait and see what it really is when it becomes available.

J A Y M O R RMemberIt will be a great camera especially if the faster FPS holds true. Awesome specs with excellent price point. I will pick one up for sure as a backup.

MemberNikon is shaking up the industry with the 36mp D800 and now an entry level FX camera. I would be tempted to go the D600 route if it weren’t for the cost of FX glass! I own two telephoto lenses that are both FX, but lose a lot of their reach when not on DX, defeating their purpose. Then I have my DX 30/1.4, 17-55/2.8, and ultra wide angle…all DX lenses! So no full frame for me, as tempting as the idea is.

Roy ConleyMemberLoren, looking at today’s Nikon DX bodies you are not giving up any noticeable reach when using a D800 on a super telephoto. And if you are close enough to fill the frame, what detail.
Jul 14, 2012 at 3:25 am #73260
Roy ConleyMemberZach, the D800 produces about a 47MB file when shooting 14bit NEF. If I have done my math right, that works out to more than 20,000 images per 1TB drive.

The Itinerant AnglerThe advantage of the 24MP profile, if that proves to be the case, is that you should still be able to get like 12-14MP of usable image space out of your DX glass, which is totally enough for what I do.

MemberOne consideration is that some of the D800 users are finding that the lenses (some of them) that worked fine on the 12-16mp bodies aren’t up to capturing the resolution that a 36mp sensor can capture. Don’t know if a 24mp body will “best” that 12-24 lens or not.
And in another direction, a lot of folks are going to the mirrorless bodies. The Olympus E-M5 is getting a lot of press, for one. Smaller, lighter, etc. But an entirely different system to buy for most of us.

Roy ConleyMemberBuzz, that is a pixel peeper making that observation. When a 36mp image is displayed at the same size (say 8X10) as a 12mp image quality is going to be about equal. Its only when you start to display/print large images that issues with artifacts rear their ugly head. For the web or magazine, Zach would be able to do a lot of cropping an still have a great image.
Personal observation, I have not seen any of my glass fail to perform well with my D800.

MemberRoy, Nail on the head and all that.

MemberRoy I am aware of that….the D800 when cropped will give the same resolution as my D7000s, but that is a moot point for me because I am not going to spend $3,000 on a body. I would in fact lose some reach for wildlife photography with the D600 when compared to my D7000s. If you are close enough to fill the frame anyways then great, but that is rarely the case with wildlife photography, and the reason I invested in a 120-300 F2.8 lens with a 2x teleconverter.
With the high ISO abilities and dynamic range of newer DX cameras like the D7000 and the great wide angles available like the sigma 8-16, nikon 10-24, and others, there is just not much motivation to invest in expensive and heavy full frame equipment when doing fly fishing and outdoors photography in my opinion. Just my two cents. (The nikon D600 would still be fun with the right glass though I am betting!)

I like the thought of a light camera like the Nikon D800 with so much resolution, but it is going to tax the hell out of the lenses and be VERY unforgiving of poor shooting skills. 😮
Maybe a better landscape option then fishing camera ?www.dsaphoto.com

John BennettMemberJust a note on the resolution.
Canon has been revising most of the top lenses for that reason.
16-35 f2.8
24-70 f2.8
85 f1.2
70-200 f2.8
500 f4 L
600 f4 L
have all been to revised for todays body’s to name a handful.Re 4/3rds and mirror less.
Yep, so far the Oly EPL3 I picked up has and continues to exceed my expectations. True it’s more $ towards new glass but I have zero intentions of mirroring lens. In time I expect to have
14-45 kit lens (have a look at my fly in post, many of those shots are with it)
8mm fisheye
maybe their 45 f2.8 or something a little better to replace the 14-45.Small, light, and more than up capable as a back up, ready go 2nd body or travel, pocket system

Roy ConleyMemberDavid, just go out and buy one.

The Itinerant AnglerIt just cracks me up that in David’s world the D800 is a “light” camera. 🙂 “Why, you don’t even need an assistant to carry it!” Hahahah.
I wouldn’t expect the 12-24mm glass to hold up at 24MP even if the image circle was large enough to allow that (which it obviously would not be). But at a pure crop, using only the center of the image circle at say 12MP, I wouldn’t think it’d be any different.

J A Y M O R RMemberStill lovin my D700 & backup D300s. It will do just fine until I have cash on hand to upgrade. But then again there is some new glass that I just may want to add to my collection. Either way it is great to be a Nikonian.

Well, compared to a medium format of something like the DSx/1Ds3 they would be fairly portable – and I am getting fairly old.. 😀
