MemberWell I have several questions about photography and equipment.
I’m looking into getting a better camera than what I have now.

Roy ConleyMemberAre you interested in learning how to set exposure, aperture and shutter speed, or are you more interested in using an AUTO setting on a more capable camera body?

MemberBoth really. I’d like to be able to get decent pictures from the get go on Auto but I’d also like something I can grow into as I learn the different settings.
I guess to put it in fly rod terms I’m not looking for a Sage TCR, that can do great things with a skilled caster. I’m looking for a z-axis, something that is still nice but suitable for a beginner with room to grow.

MemberThe G is a sweet camera I bought my mom one last Christmas but it’s not the easiest to use in full manual control. IMO the S (S90, 95, 100) series is a little easier to use and has a faster lens. Both of them are very nice cameras that produce excellent images.
Sounds like you might also want a DSLR. If so I’d stay away from the low end

Brett ColvinMemberI think you’d be very happy with something like the Nikon D5100 based on your comments and price range:

Roy ConleyMemberYes, the D5100 would be a good place to start and with the 18-55mm kit lens it should let you get into DSLR photography at a reasonable price.

I second and third that motion. Great deal for a decent DSLR. Basically the same sensor as the D7000 (which I love) minus some bells and whistles. Plus it has the pivotal screen (which I wish the D7000 had). Here’s a pretty thorough rundown:

Hope this helps!

Memberget a used canon 40D, and then purchase a new 50mm 1.8 prime for starters, It can work for fish pic shots. Not the best for full body shots. Works for pictures of larger flies. The 40D has pleanty of megapixels, and has a faster focusing system than some of the rebels. The 40D and the 50mm will cost you around 500-600 and you can get amazing pictures from that setup. Primes can allow you to get better pictures than some of the kit lenses, and are around the same price range, sometimes cheaper, but are usually very sharp and have great results. Then if you decide you like photography alot then you can expand to macro and wide angle lenses.
