    I leave for a bonefish trip in a week, and am going to be renting a lens.

    Unless you ever plan to move up to a 1D or 5D I’d go with the 17-55. It’s an awesome lens. Even if you do change bodies that lens will be an easy sell.

    Tim, for what you are doing, I think that for what you do (hiking/fishing) you will love the 17-55 range and the IS is great. I picked one up for my 30D and it is so sharp and versatile that i rarely take it off of my camera now. it is an excellent “walk around” lens. the 24-70 is not wide enough to me on crop frames like eric mentioned

    I know you picked the 17-55 but I’ll throw my 2 cents in for the 24-70.
