Gitzo Ocean Traveler Tripod

Well I found the perfect tripod for what I do…a tripod I can use on the flats in a foot of saltwater or bury in the sand at the beach…..the problem is it costs $1,000! HOW could a tripod cost that much? If I could find a used one I guess it could be justified as a lifetime investment though. Has ayone seen one of these things in person?
The one drawback besides the ridiculous price tag is the fact that it does not have a quick release plate. My main use would be for when I fish alone in the surf, or on the flats when I travel, and want to be able to take quality holdup shots of myself. Seems like a quick release plate would be key for this.
Can anybody shed any light on this piece of equipment?

PS while you’re reading could someone point me to the fantastic thread that is a list of informative posts on photography subjects, including tripods? I can’t find it now…would be a good one for a sticky…
