Canon 10-22 vs 17-40L for my 30d

I have been debating swapping out my 10-22 uwa for a better walk-around lens. Currently I have a gap between my 10-22 and my 70-200 and would like to look at swapping for the 17-40. I guess my biggest concerns are that the 17mm on a crop frame will be wide enough (yet still allow for distortion free shots at the 40mm side) and secondly the IQ of the 17-40L. It seems to get mixed reviews from what i have read.

I’d start by picking up the $100 50/1.8.

EF-S 17-55 IS would fill the gap very nicely.

I’ve been thinking of the 17-40 myself. But I would really like the 16-35mm 2.8…

I’d start by picking up the $100 50/1.8.  Its a great lens, and would help fill your gap nicely.  I’ve been making a point of shooting with that lens and not the zooms lately, and have been having alot of fun.  I think you will miss the wide angle if you got rid of the 10-22.  Other than that, the 28-135 IS actually isn’t that bad of a lens, and you can get them fairly reasonable.

I had debated that also. does the MK I metal mount shoot with the same sharpness as the mk ii?

I had debated the 17-55 but have reservations with the price for a non L build. but it has allegedly shot as sharp as the 24-70L

I had the big self debate over the 17-55 as well. I decided to go for it, and it took me over a year to save for it. I’m really glad I did. It’s a great lens, and I’m having a whole lot of fun with it.
