MemberWell – been waiting for this to hit the stands, and it did.
I think I told y’all that we took a trip to Montana this past summer as part of Jim Sammons’ Kayak Fishing show (soon to be aired on the World Fishing Network) and I was the still photographer on the trip. I was shooting for Heliconia Press, which is producing the show, and for ExOfficio, the sportswear manufacturer.
Upon return, I had a few different good stories to tell, and one of those stories landed as a six page how-to story in American Angler, the Jan/Feb 2010 issue.
We fished the Madison and Yellowstone rivers, showing folks you could indeed catch trout from Sit on Top (SOT) kayaks – there were times folks looked at us like we had a third eye, as generally it’s either wade fishing or drift boats you’ll see on the water there.
Part of the purpose of Jim’s show is to show that you can fish for damn near anything out of kayaks, and he’s caught anything from marlin to little cutthroats now. He’s continuing on that adventure, and has many more trips slated for 2010 to chase even more exotic species from the kayak. He also has a dvd out called Game On (and Game On II is in production).
http://www.helipress.com/kayakfishingmovie/ Trailer here – it’s good stuff – a lifestyle movie.
Anyway – here’s a shot of the spread, which I’m pleased to point out features a shot of a very good friend of mine from Houston, Jeff Herman. Jeff’s fish was redemption for him, as he and Jim are both pro-staff guys for Ocean Kayak, and Jim had been kicking Jeff’s butt for 2 days leading up to that sweet Madison brown.
There’s another story to tell there – I’ve a sequence of shots of him fighting and landing that fish that’s both amazing and hilarious. Still haven’t landed that story, but I feel certain that it’ll be in print sometime in 2010.
Doh – the spread:

I’d also like to thank our very own Phil Monahan (no Phil, I’ve not forgotten about ya!) 🙂 He cracked the door open for me with the editors at American Angler – mucho thanks for that Phil.
So….I close 2009 on a high note, and will pass along my motto for next year, since this year has been so good for me, “2010, like ’09 again!”
Happy New Year to you all! I hope yours is as good as mine has been, and that 2010 treats us all very, very well.
Kendal
Addenda: well, there’s more to the story. CG Feldman, our late 60s native Virginian-badass-flyfisherman who knew the area fairly well had cardiac by-pass surgery yesterday. He’s doing well, but just moments ago I received an email from his wife, who said she was able to take his copy of American Angler into the ICU and show him all the shots he was in, and read him the story. It greatly buoyed his spirits.
Sometimes you never know the impact your work might have – you just never know.
