The boss at work has offered to pay for a new mac for my design projects here at Tailwaters.

    Matt –

Main consideration is the total RAM capacity.

    Matt,

I just bought two:  one for my home office and one for my work office.  I was having trouble with the limited RAM in my previous versions, but I’m up to 16 GB on these.  I’m using the 2.8 GHz quad-core processor.  In short, I’m very happy so far.  The screen is massive, but I’m still waiting on the new tiny video to DVI adapter so I can hook up a second screen.

In addition, I also upgraded my notebook to a new MacBook Pro.  I’ve had that about two weeks, and I’ve been very happy.  Apple has designed and engineered some marvelous machines.  I have 500 G of disk on my MacBook, but I came very close to ordering 256 G of solid-state storage instead.  No moving parts!

    Cheers,
    Tim

I just saw these at the apple store while on vacation and thought they were sweet as well.

Yeah, I am definitely going to go with 8GB of ram.  I wish I could do 16, but I don’t think the boss will pay for that one.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that there’s a limit to how much ram some applications can use ?

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

Anyone with other compelling reasons to go all the way to the mac pro’s?

Eric, I’ve done a little research (read: little) and it seems like the main difference is the portability.  Obviously the Mac Pro you can pickup and take with you which some people will need – I’m weighing a purchase on both right now too.  I’m finding it harder to justify spending another $5-800 just so I can take the laptop with me.
