I was looking at purchasing my first tripod for my SLR and was wondering what you guys would recommend. I would like to keep it under $100 total package since it will be for consumer use and not professional use, and in an ideal world it would be light and durable.
any advice would be great, Thanks,

Here is a good option for the price:

Err on the side of heavy (solid) with tripods. A lousy support does more harm than good.

    Adam,

We’ve had a few very comprehensive threads here….regarding lightweight tripods for backpacking. Try the search feature for “lightweight tripod” and you’ll see the different threads. Make sure to check “all posts” for the Photography Forum when you do the search. Lot’s of good info and a few money saving ideas.

Let me know if you can’t find the threads and I’ll dig them up…..Steve

Under 100.00 is tough but I would seperate the legs from the head in your considerations. Great legs with a crappy head is just great legs. (rofl-

    thanks Will,
Steve, I found an eariler thread with a $129 carbon fiber knock off. These appear to no longer be under $200

If you are going to trust some decent gear to a tripod, I’d increase your budget just a bit.

One of my rigs is a set of Slik Pro 700DX legs ($99 MSRP) and a Manfrotto 486RC2 ball head (on sale for $59.95 at B&H right now).
