Henry Gilbey
MemberI thought I should say hello – I have been looking at these outstanding forums for a while now and thought that I should post and say hi from the (sunny ?) UK.
None of you here will have a clue who I am or what I do, but I guess that like most of you here who love to photograph fishing, it all started out because we are complete and utter fishing junkies. I had no choice but to try and turn my obsession with fishing into some kind of job – either work in fishing and try to make a living, or just fish all the time and make no living !!
I work full time as a fishing photographer and writer, and I tend to work around all kinds of fishing all over the world, for all kinds of publications etc. – with a particular love for photographing fly fishing. My actual skills at casting a fly are somewhat ropey, but I can’t get enough of photographing it and being around it. I am sure you would agree ?
Anyway, hi to all. I hope I have posted this in the right place, and my apologies if I have not…………..

MemberWow, thanks guys.
Outside of Europe where I work for a bunch of magazines, websites, tackle companies etc., you might have seen a bit of my stuff here )or perhaps not !!) :
FlyLife (Aus/NZ fly fishing mag, really nice looking publication, so badly want to go to NZ)
The Traveling Sportsman (RIP)
Wild on the Fly (ages ago)
Destination FishCurrent US Hardy catalogue cover and a bunch of photos inside
Hardy catalogue that had a bonefish tail on the front
CATCH magazine, especially the first issue where they had a bunch of my stuff
Otherwise, there is my website.
Been to the US a few times, gotta admit to being blown away by the country and the people – what an iincredible place, and the more I learn about your country, it’s fishing and the staggering range of stunning places, the more I want to come over lots and lots.

Mike McKeownMemberNice Henry… very nice…
See you’ve spent some time with Arno and the gang, and some time on the Vaal… and some time on the flats…
Great Photos, are yours the ones use on the Castaway’s website and marketing pics??

MemberThanks to all of you, more than kind…….I love looking around here, and I love the fact that fishing is such a universal language. It’s awesome to see such cool imagery of fishing here.
Mike – those yellowfish are a blast !! I have heard of some monster yellowfish sub-species up in Angola, gotta see some of that one day. I have done a lot with the FlyCastaway guys – what an awesome bunch of people, they have my utmost respect for what they do, and how they fish (on their days off !!). Yes, there are a load of my photos on their website. There is nowhere like Africa………..

MemberHere’s a nice smallmouth yellowfish taken off the Vaal river last October, about an hour and a half from Johannesburg – as Mike will attest to I am sure, such powerful fish. Would love to see a big largemouth…..

David AndersonMemberHi Henry and welcome..
There’s a few Flylife lurkers here – what stuff have you done for them ?
And yes, you need to go to UnZud, it’s VERY photogenic and the fishing is ok as well..
They seem to be having a few problems with French rugby players at the moment though.. ;D

MemberDavid – nice one about the rugby, watched the highlights of the match last night in fact, fantastic game, have to admire the French they way they turn NZ over from time to time. Somewhat better than my beloved England rugby team currently, best not go there, too sad !! Roll on the Lions v South Africa though….
I love FlyLife, had a few features with them, not loads – tigerfish, yellowfish, Seychelles GTs and milkfish I think, bones from Los Roques from memory, plus the two covers below. I keep in touch with Brad Harris from time to time, I really like his photo book on trout fishing in Tasmania. Not sure who shot the current FlyLife cover of that monster brown, but it is a stunner.

MemberDavid – us Brits have no choice but to hold on to the memories of November 2003……too long ago !!
Al – thank you. Sounds like it must have been some pix from Gabon when we were after threadfin, cubera snapper and jacks in the surf out there. Wild place, awesome fishing, scary potential. James nailed a nice threadfin off the beach on a double handed fly rod, never heard of that before off an African shore………
