Looking for information on purchasing a new reel for my 8′ 6″ St. Croix Avid. I was thinking about upgrading to an Orvis Mid-Arbor??? Any suggestions?? By the way glad I found this board again.

Jim you might find this little gear piece I did last week helpful:

Best Fly Reel Bang for Buck

As I recommended there, I’d look at the Lamson Konic or Guru reels.

The Orvis Access Mid Arbor was one of my favorite reels for 6wt and under. Solid build, good drag. Like Zach, I also like the Lamson Reels, although if you are upgrading, I would go with the Guru.

I believe I am going to go with the Guru. Now, I have an 8′ 6″ St. Croix Avid 5 Wt. Should I be getting the Guru1.5 or the Guru 2? No fly shops carry them near me so I would have to order online.

    Jim –

I’d get the Guru 2. Having a little more capacity is usually a good thing and in my experience a 3 weight and a 5 weight are different enough animals that I don’t see one reel comfortably bridging that gap. The 1.5 is a perfect 4 weight reel but would be a bit large for a 3 and a bit small for a 5. If you’re fishing a 5 weight, the Guru 2 is your winner.
