MemberI learned a new pattern today, or should I say I am learning a new pattern today.
I tried to use some of the info posted about photographing flies and hope these are better.Feb 1, 2009 at 9:21 am #66640olle bulder
MemberI like the first one the best. With this one i’d choose a bit lower position for the camera en align the fly more level hookshaft. Make sure al of the fly is in the picture, like the fiber and rubberleg ends.
If you do this could you post the largest pic possible?
Feb 1, 2009 at 12:13 pm #66641keith b
MemberThanks Ollie,
and when you said biggest possible did you mean pixel size?
he is a larger picture for you and I tried to get ll of the things in it correct as you suggested.

There is still some shadowing in the back, but I am working on it.
Thanks for the comments.Feb 1, 2009 at 2:36 pm #66642olle bulder
MemberHi Keith largest possible is 650 X 650 pixels. This is the size Zach prefers to use on the board and wich will give the best result.
For what i can see now it looks better, you an also try a more frontal view. This will make the width of youre fly a bit smaller.

MemberOK, understood. I will resize the previous ones.
hope that is better. thanks again for the tips

MemberKeith, the second round of shots are much better. I love that you are honing in on the photos and have a desire to learn.
That is a great stealth bomber by the way! Fantastic pattern – I have an entire box of em in many different colors. (FYI, great pattern for the local ponds or DH section of the Hootch during the summer – shoal bass tear em up; literally).

MemberThanks Neal,
I do have the link to the manuel, as well as the original.
Check out this one, I changed some things, but before I read your post.
I call this one my Speed Racer Stealth Bomber, just playing around with some foam right now.
I will definitely look into the suggestions you made, today, and I will see what I can improve. Some of these changes are very subtle and the color changes are difficult for me as I am color deficient. Not going to let that slow me down though! I might have to become the Ansel Adams of the fly world 😉

comments on the difference in these two?
PS – I how are you seeing the info on my pics? I would love to know so I can see what I did since I am just messing around and not writing everything down for each shot.
PSS- I already trimmed the legs on the othersFeb 1, 2009 at 5:54 pm #66646Daryl Human
MemberThe bottom fly looks like its got too much light coming in from the right.
Neal did a great little contribution about taking pics of flies in the vice recently. I saw that Neal put those articles on his site, so have a look there.

MemberI like the latest shots a lot. The angle of the fly and vise in a tangential position is a nice touch. The red background motif contrasts well with the white fly but … remember that red is the strongest color signal and tends to saturate very easily compared to other colors. I have found a little bit is nice but too much can be overwhelming, especially in macro photography. A black background would be nice for this fly. Your lighting is a bit off but I must say it’s much better each and every picture you post. The great thing on that last series is that the viewer can clearly see the elements of the fly and get an idea how to tie it, nice and clear. Cool shot.
BTW, it is somewhat bad form to comment on someone’s EXIF/Metadata without permission and for that I apologize. However, since we have been discussing your camera and settings I thought it might help you better get at your goal. There are many ways to find EXIF data on a picture if the author doesn’t remove it on export. Whatever program you use to edit pictures (e.g. Photoshop, Elements, NX Capture, etc) has the ability to read the data.

MemberThanks again guys. The picture did have more light on the right side.

MemberI just put the Ott Light on the desk tonight and thought I would throw a hook in the vise and work on a variation of a stealth bomber.

MemberI like I like ;D For a teacher you are a good student. Seriously, each picture you post shows vast improvement from the prior. The background is great and I see no obvious hot spots on the fly itself. Very nice instructional fly shot Keith. You might want to tweak the aperture to get the entire fly in focus but otherwise looking great.
Drop me a PM for a trick on tying that aft black foam loop. I fear that the thread is going to cheese wire the foam over time the way it is now tied.

Kent EdmondsMemberHey guys. I know this is a photo-related topic so I really don’t belong, but if you want the info, foam template and tying instructions on the stealth bomber it is on my site here – http://flyfishga.com/stealth.htm.

MemberThanks Kent. Your site is wonderful and the templates were a Godsend when I started tying your pattern. It is killer.
I believe you call that “full pimp” if not mistaken?
Feb 9, 2009 at 2:55 am #66653
Kent EdmondsMemberThanks Neal – glad it works for you. And yep that one is fully pimped.
Oh, and Keith, I wouldn’t worry about getting mono thread for the SB. Standard thread works fine & looks better. I expect you had that suggestion from Steve Davenport – he likes using it because it

MemberHey..why do Kent’s look better than mine? 😉
Thanks Kent, and you are correct on the mono.
Kent,
you seem not to trim the wing on yours.Feb 9, 2009 at 10:50 pm #66655
Kent EdmondsMemberKeith,
I suppose you talking about trimming the little corner off at the back of the wing. It certainly can make a difference, depending on how big a corner you cut. If you cut less you will get more of a dive & a bubble trail, plus more of a wiggle on the retrieve.I must admit I have changed the shape of the foam a tad from the original template and now I cut the whole thing in a smooth curve. But when I used the other template, I just barely clipped the corner. Yours seem to have a large piece cut out – that will make them more aerodynamic, but at the expense of action.

Steve K.MemberKent….your white Stealth Bombers were “the bomb” when it came to catching pike in Katmai last summer!
