MemberNikon has officially discontinued the SB-800 flash. None available at B&H, Adorama, or Ritz and Amazon will be out by tomorrow.
So the 800s are gone and the expensive SB-900, which dropped significantly in price last month is going to go back up in price. I was told that the SB-900 will likely go even higher in the coming weeks now that the 800’s are off the market. Pretty tricky marketing scheme and even though I am not in the market per se it is just frustrating to see these tactics, especially when most people prefer the 800’s.
Do you think there will be similar schemes for lenses over the next 2-3 years when FX becomes more popular? The 50mm f1.4 is already up $50 from introductory price at B&H!
For those in the game longer than myself, what is going on here? Is this common practice or is it the economy or just Nikon cleaning house and changing products/prices?

John BennettMemberNo way to know Neal. Both Nikon and Canon have been raising prices lately and well, frankly, it confounds me. Make absolutely no sense in this enviroment.
Pisses me off to, as Ive been saving like a feind for my dream lens and Im close. Still a ways to g but close enough that it was within sight. A few sales or assignment and I might have done it. Last week they raised the price by 600.00. By the time the tax man gets through with me, its a hefty increase. Enough that maybe its a blessing in diguise and I wont get it till the fall if at all tis year.
Both Canon and Nikon recently announced pretty bad quarters..So their response when people around the world are losing jobs and those who havent are worried and cutting back is to raise prices?
Go figure

MemberSo apparently the rumor is that Nikon is going to release two new flashes later this year – SB-400 and SB-700.

The Itinerant AnglerNeal –
Actually, I think the price spikes have to do with some issues on the international currency market, since all Nikon products are originally valued in Japanese Yen.

Membermeaning Nikon will be selling exactly 5 instead of 7 in 2009 QTR 1.
LMAO; I’m gonna miss those granite countertops.

MemberI think the price fluctuations are due to rubberbanding of supply and demand. Discontinuing the 800? … I think I’ll keep my three. The 900 has a reputation for huge energy consumption, and until they figure out how to get built in dedicated radio communication – flash-to-flash, I’m not going anywhere even if the controls on the back of the 900 are easier. The whole line of sight dedication thing is spotty so much of the time. shannon

Ben CochranMemberI hate it, hate it, hate it!!! The 900 is far to automated and has many features that take away artistic control, it is more dedicated to benefit the beginner that does not want to invest time in learning. The 900 has many features that I would also have to pay for and would never use and turn off. The 800 was still out selling the 900 with a higher demand on the 800, they got rid of the 900’s primary competition… >:(
As for me and the advise that offer to everyone now. The SB800 sucks and that is the reason that they discontinued them. Please spread the word on how bad the SB800 was and I will keep my hopeful eye on some great used ebay SB800 auctions 😉

MemberA quote from Nikon Rumors, “It’s a very long time since prices in the photo/imaging market increased. Cameras and lenses fell in price until they offered incredibly good value for money. In times of recession it seems counter-intuitive for prices to rise but that’s exactly what is about to happen, mainly due to the currency fluctuations.”
Apparently Sigma is going to significantly increase the price of all U.S. lenses next week.

MemberOnce the SB800s were discontinued, they went on sale in many places and were in the low $200s.
