John BennettMemberFill flashed to compensate for back lighting.
Saw-Whet. They remind me of Furbies.

John BennettMemberThanks guys.

Sure, next time I need a Sherpa lugging 50 pounds of gear in through brush at 4:00am I’ll call you 🙂Neal:
Yeah I had the 400 on. In reality you can shoot Saw-Whets with much less. This shot would have been close to 12 feet (the 400s MFD) however you can walk right upto Saw-Whets. I wouldnt recomend it and in fact would probaby say something if I ever saw it, but you could lierally reach out and touch them. They dont flush easily nor do they seem to get spooked. The hard part is finding them as they are so small (this guys about 6 inches tall) and they tend to tuck in tight within cedars.Alot of finding Owls is knowing their habits and usual habitat.
Saw Whets like cedars
LEOs like Pines
SEOs roost on te ground and come out at dusk
NHOs like taller trees, usually over looking fields and tend to roost near the top
GHO like Oaks and Pines
Snowies like open fields and often roost on the ground.
Barred Owls Ive seen in alot of areas but they, like LEOs are skittish
The Boreal Owl I got this weekend was in a stand of Jack Pines

John BennettMemberZach
I’ve been looking at that trying to figure out what it is myself since first opening the file (didnt notice it during image capture).Owls excrete “pellets” which are little nothing than bones and fur or “Whitewash” (liquified Owl Crap) .
It has the appearance of Whitewash which incidentally is a good indicator when trying to locate Owls. Find a tree with alot of Whitewash on the trunk/branches and chances are you’ve found a roost.
But I’m not convinced it is.
a) positioning seems off
b) Owls are pretty fastidous..alot like cats and I can’t imagine one leaving a crapcicle hanging. So to answer that question.
im not sureNumber two, are you the one who’s been sending all those emails with this title to my spam filter?
Rotflmao…took a minute or two for me to clue in but once I did lol.

ZachThat was funny ;D
Love the shot John! I am not a big fan of typical fill flash but I am a big fan of proper use of fill flash; this makes me a big fan of this shot, John. Cool meter for the strobe compensation effect my friend!
Those eyes are seriously intense and wold probably scare the heck out of me if I found them looking at me through the camera frame 😀 ;D
