MemberI am curious what set ups people are using for their Photoshop work. Seems we have a very mobile group and we obviously have avid photographers, computer users, and Photoshop users. So what is your set up? (On another thread, someone mentioned having both an IMac for home and a MacBookPro for school/travel. I am leaning toward option 2 on the poll, going only with a MacBook Pro, but coveting Cinema screen for my home office and photo set up. Trying to simplify my life and save money with fewer computers but wondering if this will be a satisfactory solution. Currently, I have a laptop PC that I hate (poor quality to begin with, so I am not flaming PC laptops in general), and an old desktop PC that is ok but ready for pasture (again, probably a cheap PC).

MemberJust a sec- I’m being discriminated against – I’m an impoverished avid photographer that uses neither a Mac or Photoshop. I can’t afford either.

MemberI don’t think this is a real poll about what system is best and what software you should use. You already know what system youre gonna buy, a mac!
I use a Laptop PC with Photoshop and Lightroom. No Problem at all.

Definitely not a poll about what is best –

MemberMy next computer buy will be a big ass PC with a lot of horse power. This for the higher demand of power by the latest graphic studio’s and develop studio’s.
And games ofcourse 🙂

Ben CochranMemberAaron, if you are thinking of getting a Mac Book Pro, you won’t need a docking station for the larger display. The Mac Book Pro’s have a larger logic board and come with the attachments for hard wiring directly into the cinema displays. In other words, they are already compatible. Save the money and think about adding the Airport extreme wireless network, you can add printers and multiple hard drives (with a separate USB hub) directly into your wireless network and also use it as a router. It is also great for sharing files with other computers in the network, just finished doing that with mine and this rascal is pretty fast [ch9786]. I recommend saving the money on a docking station and perhaps add a wireless mouse and keyboard too, you may be one happy chappy.

MemberI get the MAC v. PC question all the time, and you really have it right – carefree. However, that’s not just an image thing. I describe MACs as being for the person who “just wants to punch a button, and have it go.” I’ve heard PCs described as being for the person who also wants to wear a tool belt. Price is outrageous, but my two G5 towers and one MacBook Pro are still rocking along after three years. How many lives in PC world is that? texasflycaster

MemberFor what its worth, I still have a 2 notebook PCs, one 2.5 years old and one over 4 years old, that are still going strong. The only reason I have purchased new systems is because upgrades on notebooks are limited to memory only and I like to have the latest and greatest so that I may comfortably run the latest and greatest.
I really did look into the Macbook pro, and I really was disheartened by the price. Apple certainly does not cater to that ‘carefree lifestyle’ and image that they are trying to sell with their marketing. :'(

EDIT: And, if you really are anti-Microsoft, you can very easily run a Linux OS on any PC. Everything that you are running on Windows can very easily be run through emulation if it is not available for Linux. It may require you to have some technical know-how, however.
Mike, a key component of the ‘carefree lifestyle’ is an outrageous trust fund.

You mean it isnt living in a van down by the river?

MemberNo trust fund. Actually closer to living in my 25-year-old Land Cruiser down by the river. A loving wife keeps me from being a homeless photographer — that is a photographer who is homeless. texasflycaster

MemberI don’t see any reason to buy a mac. The only reason i can think of is that the quality of showing colors (photo) is said to be better than on a PC. I have never seen it with my own eyes and i think with the screens available at the moment that would not be a problem with a PC.
My reason for keep buying PC’s is that over the years i’ve learned a lot about pc’s and i don’t feel like doing that again with a mac.
And what above is said about linux is absolutly true. And linux is getting better every day and a lot user friendly.

Also, surfing porn on the multiwebs is a lot more dangerous with a PC because of the bad people and their viruses, malware and spyware.

MemberI heard the Mac OS will intuitively sense your porn preferences and automatically browse to sites that you may find interesting.
