With all of the deals out there on electronics this holiday season I’m looking to purchase my first DSLR.

My intentions are to shoot high quality fishing photography both for personal use and perhaps professional (magazine publishing purchases).  Due to Zach’s website I had my first piece published in American Angler this past summer–I’d like to have a shot at getting more “significant” pieces published and realize that I’d have to learn my way around a good camera and get some quality pictures in order to do so.  I’m also looking to do this simply for personal enjoyment–I love great photography and hope to produce some good shots of my own.

The photos and the knowledge on this board always impresses me, and I’m hoping that you folks will lend me your wisdom as I’m making this choice.

I’ve spent a pretty significant chunk of time looking over different models–it seems like the two major companies out there are Cannon and Nikon, so I’ve been looking at their products specifically.  I’ve narrowed my search specifically to three models–Nikon’s D80, Cannon’s EOS Rebel Xsi, and Cannon’s Rebel XS.

Do any of you have a preference between these three models, and if so, why?  I’ve heard that Cannon’s lenses have been “interchangeable” for a very long time, and that Nikon’s have not.  Is that true?

Thanks in advance for any help with this matter.  It is much appreciated.

    Brett –

I can only speak for Nikon.

Alright so this probably won’t go over super well w/ everyone here as many of the picture takers on this site are both accomplished and thorough…I’m neither, but I do enjoy taking “nice” pictures.
