John BennettMemberI’ve been on a mission since August. Sponging all the info I can from a few hunting forums, picking some friends brains, watching Primos hunting vids (mastering the call) and watching Wild TV like any other White tail junky. Then on any day where I wasn’t obligated to shoot something else I’d scout fields before sun up, mark game trails on my forrays and otherwise try to increase my odds of getting some good Buck shots that weren’t gotten by anything other than some luck (right place/right time).
Still hoping for bigger and better, but this encounter was cool. My first success at calling in a buck

About 30 minutes after the above Buck was piqued by my calls. This guy came a sniffing.

Hopefully theres a bigger Buck yet lurking in that cedar swamp and some better light to come but for now I aint complaining 🙂

MemberJohn,
Nice pics of those bucks.
If you aren’t doing this already, get a set of antlers, or fake antlers made for rattling, and use those to simulate two bucks fighting over a doe. Rattling antlers will call in all the big boys in the area, and at the time they are rutting, they will litterally come running at full bore. I also use a grunt call, but the antlers have given me the best results, even without the grunt call. This is a highly successful technique used here in Texas, and I am sure you have seen it on hunting shows and used elsewhere. It really does work.

John BennettMemberThanks guys.
John Im planning on picking up a rattle bag in time for this weekend. Couple guys have cautioned me it will scare smaller Bucks away though, and might only draw in the big boys. Sort of a use them if I want a go big or gome home empty morning.
Another has said it will be good to use if I want to get facial and body language reactions out of Bucks after getting a few shots. Meaning if they haven’t

Another has said it will be good to use if I want to get facial and body language reactions out of Bucks after getting a few shots. Meaning if they haven’t spooked or I haven’t been busted taking a few shots and then I want to get a strong reaction from said Buck to give a good rattle.
Figure that will be worth it.
I haven’t seen rattling scare ANY bucks away, small or large. I have drawn in lots of spikes while rattling as well as large bucks. I personally like the actual antlers rather than the bags, but do what you think is the easiest and gives the best sound.
When rattling, I keep a good eye out, and try to keep my movement hidden. Don’t be afraid to rattle them loudly and really get after it….10 – 15 secs at a time.

John BennettMemberThanks John, I’ll give them a look see.
Drifter.
400mm straight up. It had been raining and the light was crap. As is all those shots were at ISO 800 and less then 1/160th z(highest ss, lowest as 1/100th) …handheld.Losing and extra stop of light (f8) and trying to handhold at appx 560mm and at 1/50th on a 1.3 crop would have been near impossible.
