Bike and ski means action shots. I know some of the Nikon bodies have a high sync speed because they use an electronic shutter. If I were shooting a lot of action, I would go with one of those Nikons so I could shoot high speed with a flash.
I myself love the Canon system, but that’s all I’ve ever known…

Unless you’re in a screaming hurry, I wouldn’t buy anything just yet.

The big daddy trade show in photography is on soon (September I think?) and there is always great new stuff for it.

Both Canon and Nikon will have new bodies & lenses and there will be a raft of new PHD cameras as well.

It’s always fun to spend other people’s money, but it’s more fun if we know the budget and what (generally) you’re looking to get.

How much do you anticipate getting from the Ins. Co.?

What’re you looking for in terms of reach?

I should be getting around 15k.

    What was in the bag.

Nikon f5 and Fuji S2 pro bodies.

    2-SB-28 speed lights

    1- flash cable

    3- Nikkor AFS lenes all f2.8; 12-24, 24-70, 80-200

    1- Nikkor AFS 50 1.4

    15 to 20 hoya filters

    3 2gig 120x? cards

    2- 300 gig Seagate Drives

My laptop w/ UG18 and Photochop 2, office pro ect,

    24 rechargeable batteries/chargers

    Battery Grip.

    All the cleaning stuff.

    Lowe-pro Camera Bag.

    Carbon Mono-Pod.

No flim in the bag thou.

I think Ill opt out form getting both bodies replaced, and will just get a d300 or maybe a d2x  if they give me some wiggle room.  The lap top I’ll be getting 5k for because of the software, so I’m just going to get a Macbook pro.  Other than that…. I need to call the claims guy.

I’ve been a Nikon guy for a long time and their current offerings meaning to D300 and D3 are probably the best action cameras going right now. I think the D300 is a better camera than the D2xs which is what I use now. I don’t know much about to new D700. I use the 17-55 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 with the D2xs and they are great lenses but expensive. I would like to get my hands on the new 200 2.8 but once again its really expensive too. You have a opportunity to rethink your kit which I guess is the silver lining to a otherwise bad situation.

Actually it kind of sucks. I just replaced everything from a fire and I am sick of it.

You mentioned $5000 for the laptop because of the software. You might want to check your policy because software is usually not covered. If you own a registered adobe product. Adobe will replace it. I know this from experience. Actually all registered product will be replace by most software companies

Also when it comes to computers and cameras the insurance companies usually give fair depreciated replacement value which is a way of saying “not much”, then come back after you prove that you replaced it with a SIMILAR, SAME, to Equal product – they then will cut you another check for the differnce in depreciation.

Insurance companies have to play this game… but it is only the fault of the consumers who abuse the system.

So.. I think I’m going with the Cannon 50d over the Nikon D300.

if i had to start over again with gear, i’d go with:

    waterproof point and shoot
less expensive nikon DSLR and get more lenses.

i spent a lot on the D70 and haven’t bought a new lens in a loooong time.
i’ve been getting all my add on stuff on ebay from DSLR sensor cleaner, lens covers, caps, tripods etc.

i had my camera stolen from my pocket at a DMB show a few years back, i was talking to a cop at the time too! AMEX sent me a check after i filed a police report. i had bought it the day before
