MemberFound a great new place to practice shooting fast moving subjects with my 400mm and just some general photography this weekend. We have an RC Airstrip a few miles from my house where just about any weekend weather permitting, there will be some of the most beautiful RC airplanes I’ve even seen flying. The guys loved me being there shooting their planes and catching the low flying stunts they were doing. Some of those planes are quite large and very expensive. One of them, the Miss Arkansas put on one heck of a show along with a P51 Mustang. They were seeing who could go the lowest. Mrs Arkansas had a slight mishap and crashed on the side of the runway at slow speed. She was just fine except for a chewed up prop, thankfully! I took 8gig worth of photos and hopefully I’ll get to sell a few CD’s to the fliers. Here are a few that I really liked. The rest of the album (not 8gig) can be seen here. http://www.trophyfishingtn.com/coppermine/thumbnails.php?album=44

MemberCool, you got pics of my two favorite planes of WWII. The F4U Corsair and the P51 Mustang. Very nice captures, Mike. 🙂

MemberGlad you enjoyed them and if you see where some improvements can be made please, please, please, feel free to critique.
If you have a RC Airstrip it’s a great place to practice up on photo skills and shooting around total strangers.
I bought this Sigma 5.6 400mm tele macro last year and had just about given up on it until this set of photos. That lens just never impressed me with color reproduction, sharpness or focus speed on my A100. Once I strapped it to the A700 it came to life. To give credit where it is due the 700 focus motor is in a different universe then the 100. It was never a problem searching for focus at all, in fact.
Getting the plane in the lens was the hardest part because those planes are pretty darn fast. This is a great way to learn how to raise a big lens and put it in the right spot so the subject is in the frame wehn the camera meets your eye. I got progressively better as the day went on. Still, the best method was to find it waaay out as it made an approach and follow it until it got into range. If it was within 100 yards it was almost impossible to get it in the frame before it buzzed outa range. The people there were great folks with a big addiction to fun. The big camera seemed to give them nerves of steel. As soon as the big lens came out the aerial stunts began. This means at some point you’re going to get something interesting. I didn’t know this was coming so I didn’t get a great shot since I had to find the plane as it was in close and at flying at full speed. This shot is the Miss Arkansas inverted below the weeds, and she made it back up!
Then as she came in to land I think she ran outa fuel and fell short of the runway. Just like the Razorbacks always do. Ha!Oct 1, 2008 at 5:11 pm #64975
Chad SimcoxMemberCool shots Mike! I like the “Sky Hawk” leaving the fake chem trail and the head on shot of the WWII plane. With some interesting post processing, you could make some really cinematic images out of these photos.
