MemberI have been wanting to put together some tutorials, but the end-result images often lack much. I have a gray back panel attached to my vise, which helps, but my problem is the lighting. When you guys have done such things, are you only using your TTL, or do you throw in some strobes and other lights? Also, is lens choice very crucial for something like this?
Thanks guys,

MemberThanks Neal. When you get a chance, can you pm or email me your number. No hurry. I know I still need to get the ttl. I just wanted to get some ideas before making purchases.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’m not sure I understand why you need the TTL feature. Basically that just means you’re camera is going to turn off the flash when it thinks you have proper reached proper exposure in your image. You can just as easily use manual settings on your strobes and expose based on the aperture/distance relationship. Paying for the TTL feature is expensive and, in my opinion, not necessary. Photographers got by just fine without TTL before Nikon introduced the feature in the 80s. I personally have never used a TTL system, so I can’t speak on how much they help you, but I can verify that they are not a requirement for fly photos.
If you’re looking for a set up for just shooting flies, why not use hot lights? Honestly it could be as simple as a few clamp lights on dowel rods. Ever seen a light stand for clamp lights made out of a yard stick set into concrete inside a coffee can? Pretty cool, cheap and effective tool for using clamp lights. You can then get creative using foil and/or cinefoil to add or take away light.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Ben CochranMemberI love “Call me” post’s, they always seem expensive LOL
I have all of the TTL gadgets but to be perfectly honest with you, I rarely use it. I mostly set all of my strobes on manual and control them wirelessly. Can’t say that I really am a big fan of TTL as I prefer to have total control but the TTL functionality is pretty much a standard built in option with all of the better new hotshoe strobes..

True. At least you also counseled me on how to prepare my secondary business schema to fund my depreciation. Laughing quietly.
