I love that Sony and others are coming out. While its going to be tough “stealing” customers due to the cost of switching systems and people who already own Nikon/Canon having too much invested in glass and accessories. Hopefully they can put some pressure on them to develop, maybe lower prices etc.
Competition is good for us.
The cost of switching systems has kept me on the Sony side of the fence, for now at least. I’m with John in that I doubt many Canon or Nikon Pros will switch over. I think if anything this camera will draw some prosumer users into that pro body that they’ve always wanted but couldn’t afford.
While the lower camera price is nice the lenses are not cheaper and since Sony controls the price they aren’t coming down anytime soon. I’m dying to get the SSM 70-200 2.8 but at $1800 and that’s without any kind of IS I’m just going to have to save up. The Zeiss lenses aren’t much better in that regard either.
It is too noisy, seriously. Â I am beginning to believe that Nikon is right to be hovering around 12 MP. Â The simple fact is, when you cram that many photosites onto a chip, even a full frame chip, you don’t have enough space between the sites to prevent interference. Â Unless they come up with some kind of spray or dampening process, I think there’s just a finite limit to how many sites you can put on a chip with current technology. Â I was not impressed with the sample images from the Sony I saw – at 1600ISO it was noisier than the D70, which was a noisy camera. Â For outdoor landscapes shot at 200ISO it’d be just fine, but the pros who need file sizes that big are going to demand versatility – they don’t want a land camera.
Some folks were suggesting that the camera might be able to interpolate “off” photosites with “on” photosites to achieve lower noise at higher ISOs, while sacrificing some file size.
According to Canon they’ve done something called “gapless” photosites on the new 50D that has allowed them to not only increase MP from 10 to 15, they claim theyve improved high ISO performance by 1 to 1.5 stops.
A poster on another board recently put up some night softball shots he did with the Nikon D700. He showed shots at ISO 1600, 4000, 5000, 6400 and 12800.Un Fing real is all I can say. Its not until ISO 5000 that noise is really apparent. His ISO 4000 shot is clean as a whistle.
Gizmodo faked me out – they posted a pic of some boots and said they were at 1600ISO, when in reality they were 6400ISO (as they corrected):

Not as bad as the D70 at all.
Admittedly I’m a rookie at all this but I’ve spent a lot of time digging through reviews, example galleries, and compares, where High ISO is concerned.
I don’t agree about noise and high pixel counts, my DsIII’s are very good at high ISO and even on huge prints 1600 is very nice provided it’s well shot.
They’re about 10 times better than film ever was.Noise in general is overstated in reviews by pixel peepers who don’t do anything with photos other than gawk at them on-screen.
A lot of people also confuse noise & grain.A bigger problem with high rez cameras is going to be lens quality, I think the 12-13 MP range doesn’t challenge most lenses, but above that can really show up any short comings.
I do agree it’s great that Sony have dived into the market in such a big way, it will bring prices down and features up with Canon & Nikon.
You can already see a drop in prices at Canon since Nikon removed their finger from their butt and started playing ball again.It’s all good.. 😉
