The Sony has done nothing wrong and takes great photos but,,, Just after I bought the A700 Canon announced the D50. It wouldn’t have even been a consideration had that camera been out when I was shopping. I bought the A700 from Amazon and have barley used it. I believe they have a very liberal return policy so I can return it within 30 days. I’m considering a few options here.
1. Buy the D40 as cheap as I can find one (used maybe) so I’ll at least have something to play with. Once the 50 comes out sell the 40 and upgrade. Probably the worst decision since I’ll lose when I sell the 40. But Oct is a bad month to be without a camera…
2. Pre order the D50 and buy lenses and flashes while I’m waiting.
3. Keep the 700
My questions to you canon guys is what lenses I need to be looking for should I decide to make the transition.
I’m looking for:Macro (replacing a 2.8 50mm),
Wide angle zoom (replacing a Carl Zeiss 3.5-4.5 16-70mm).
70-200mm zoom (replacing an 2.8 80-200mm),
Fast prime (replacing a 1.4 55mm)
A good flash under $400.
The Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Zoom Lens comes as a kit lens. Should I but it or just the body?
Any other suggestions for a must have are welcome. I’d like to see how much this is going to cost me before I decide what I’m going to do for sure.

I for one am uncomfortable recomending anything. I can tell you what Id do but a) our situation are different and b) it your $ money, not mine and a switch like represents alot.The 1 thing I will say is that in a number of ways the 40/50D is sort of 6 of one, half dozen of another. Yes there are some nice advancements in the 50D but nothing Id call earth shattering. Meaning if I had a 40D Id not run out and upgrade to the 50. Plus with the 50D coming out the price of the 40D can be expected to drop, wich ultimately mean its even more value for the buck than it already is. The 40D is alot of camera for its retail price.
As for lenses, you could look at.
Macro
The canon 100 f2.8, the 60mm ( EF-S) or the Sigma 105 f.28. The Sigmas a great macro for almost half the price of the Canon 100 f2.8.Wide angle. Alot depends on budget. Nice WAs that dont cost an arm and a leg relatively speaking
17-40 F4 L
17-85 IS ( EF-S)
Tammy 18-50 f2.8 ( I tinhk it is)
There theres the 24-70 f2.8 L, 24-105 f4 LFast Primes without breaking the bank
50mm 1.4 and 85mm f1.8Good Flash under 400.
430 ex??

70-200 F4 L
70-200 F4 L IS
70-200 f2.8 L
70-200 f2.8 l IS
Each IS version cost about 800.00 more than the repective non IS.
Sigma also makes a nice 70-200 f2.8As for your body, again its a tough one not sure what to tell you there. If you do swicth bands there are lots and lots of lens choices. Thats one advantage of going Canon/Nikon.
From what I hear the chip in the 50D with the Digic4 proc. has great color and very good high ISO performance.
It’s also 14 bit if you want to get real fussy with color.
Lens wise, I bet with the 100 2.8 macro it would be an awesome set-up for shooting insects & flys.
The 50 1.4 would be a good cheap (ish) fast portrait lens and the 17-40 f4L would be a good general zoom for fishing stuff.

The 40d takes a great shot …but i wished I had waited a bit until I got mine …they dropped by a few hundred in the first 3 months ….I have the 100mm2.8 macro and it is great ………the 50mm 1.8 is a great lens as well

John that is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I spent a lot of time studying the old Minolta glass and finding the best of the best, on a budget of course. I’ll run these lenses and see what turns up and how much. Is there an independent website dedicated to just canon equipment? Minolta and Sony users go here http://www.dyxum.com . There’s a wealth of knowledge as well as camera and lens reviews with user samples.
