Sorry for the n00b question, but I’m trying to separate my sky filter from my circular polarizer, so I can clean between them. They are quite stuck. Any photographer tricks for separating two filters? You know, the equivalent of holding two stuck fly-rod sections behind your knees?

    Thanks,

    Phil

Try wrapping a rubber band around it, Phil.

Was going to suggest what Carter just said.

Theres actually a “tool” thats part wrench grip with about a 12 inch long rubber tongue. Wrap the rubber around whatever, thread it back through the grip. Plenty of torque and tension to loosen anything you dont want to mar. Ive used mine on my CP/Lens when they got stuck without a hitch.

Probalby available all over the place.

Thanks, guys. Strangely enough, after much fruitless effort, I was simply absent-mindedly fiddling with them and they came apart like magic. Perhaps I was trying TOO hard.

The Cir polarizer on my 400mm gets stuck alot. I can’t force it loose by turning the knurled threaded part but if I spin the glass back and forth a few times it always breaks loose.

I was going to say the same thing, just start spinning the circular element and every thing should start moving freely.

    Phil,

Get a couple of the rubbery pads that Rick Pope sells (with TFO or Mangrove logos on them).

I think those pads might be made of grippy shelf liner; a spey rod supplier was packaging a small baggie with the grippers for unseating ferrules, paraffin wax for lubricating them, and electric tape to prevent slippage.

if you can get them off of the lense you can put them in the freezer.. this sometimes works…
