Steve K.MemberI chose Nikon and really love my camera and lenses. Howeva…… If I knew I would enjoy wildlife photography as much as I do…..I probably would have opted for Canon. Their telephoto lenses seem to be less costly than comparable Nikon lenses.
Dos centavos.

Chad SimcoxMemberJust out of curiosity, why do you want to go full frame?

MemberChad,
Been doing a lot of reading, seems there a few benifits from going bigger; faster motor, more mega pixels amongst others that are drawing me to it.

MemberAaron,
I shoot Canon myself but regardless of the system you choose there is one piece of advise that will improve your photos more than anything.

MemberI shoot Nikon but its the person behind the camera that really matters.
Nikon is kicking ass and taking names right now and people are switching.
Scott Bourne of the This Week In Photography Podcast is a really good bird photographer and he shot Canon for 16 years and he switched over to the Nikon D3 System. You might want to check out the podcasts from the past few weeks to hear what they have to say about it.I use a D2xs but I would go full frame now and intend to in the future. I think the DX format is going to fade. Having bigger pixels is better!

MemberI bet the DX lenses fade away but I bet a DX sized sensor will somehow remain an option, especially if there is any truth to the rumors of interchangeable sensors being in the works.

David AndersonMemberI shoot people stuff 95% of the time and use Canon 1DsIII’s and prime lenses.
I tried a Nikon D3 a few weeks ago and it’s a nice camera, and well laid out, but the Canon eats it at low ISO for skin tone and general color..
It’s also no where near enough resolution for me – though they are bringing out a higher rez model very soon and I will be interested to give it a try.If I shot sports I would probably have to Nikon for it’s excellent high ISO performance and live with the low ISO.
Though I will say that the high ISO performance of the DsIII’s is very good and at 1600 ISO I can get very clean color and great contrast.Lens wise both brands are the best, Nikon have really good wides and Canon are great over 50mm.
You wouldn’t call one lens system better than the other IMHO.
One thing I will say, I would only have Canon or Nikon at the moment.

MemberEarly on in my career as a photographer I had a really good mentor his name was Fred Picker. Fred had a way of summing things up and getting right to the heart of a issue. He once said “if I heard Ansel Adams was making prints wearing hip waders I’d give it a try”. I miss Fred but there are many stellar photographer using either brand and you can study there work and get a feel for how one brand of camera looks compared to another. If a exceptional photographer working in a area changes gear and he’s not on the dole from the manufacturer I would check out why they switched. You really are kind of splitting hairs now between Nikon and Canon for a small format camera now though.

John BennettMemberAaron.
Anytime someone mentions switching systems the hairs on the back of my neck stand out. The first thing anyone who has switched from one to the other will tell you is that they took a financial bath doing so.Are there differences?
Yes I beleive so.In lenses not so much, except for maybe in the long lens arena.
I know a guy who shoots with with both the 1DsMKIII and the Nikon. D3. I dont think he really has a preference but I will say he uses Nikon for weddings, Canon for wildlife/action. My guess is he uses the D3 for weddings/studio primarily because Nikon has a better flash system. Canon for its speed, ISO performance. Even rob Galbraith who has been hounding Canon over the MKIII still choose it over the D3 for his sports shooting. But again, I tihnk its such a small thing as to not matter for most of the world.
If your thinking about a full frame down the road the D700 is sweeeeet. I’m blown away by the images Im seeing coming from it.
If somone offered me a 1DMKIIn or MKIIII with a 5D (new model due this fall) or a D3, and a D700 free Id close my eyes and choose.
Those are the cream of the crop from each maker though. It wasnt until now that Nikon addressed some things that (imo) gave Canon a decided edge. Canon will be coming out with their new bodies this year.
tit for tat..We the consumers win.
*****************************Dont be surprised now that Nikon has addressed some things in their flagship/premier lines to see some of that trickle down to their prosumer and consumer line ups in their next salvos.

MemberI have a Canon 10D, and have been watching this post and Dusty’s post on Canon lenses.

MemberI already have the EF 50mm f/1.4
John, how do you like this lens, and under what circumstance do you reach for it above others?
D.Aug 8, 2008 at 7:26 pm #64155john michael white
MemberI have only had the 50mm 1.4
Aug 8, 2008 at 10:08 pm #64156
David AndersonMemberJohn, that sounds like a good kit, I would add the 50 1.4 as a fast portrait, low light and product lens and maybe the 100 macro for close ups.
I think that would be an awesome kit..

Aug 9, 2008 at 12:50 am #64159Aaron Otto
MemberGood thoughts Will. I actually was moving in another direction with my question, but as you helped me see, my scope wasn’t big enough.
I read this thread about a dozen times from start to finish. I decided to stay with Nikon, and ordered a D700 today. I also ordered the 12-22 AFS DX 2.8. I was delusional thinking that a new brand would give me what I was after. Time behind the lens, is the only answer.
So with that framework, I need to start the build on lenses. I’ve got two or three primary subjects. At thirty, I know I don’t have the talent or time to do what Dave A, amongst others, do, and further more an absence of potential to start with. I’m okay with it, I enjoy taking pictures, so that works for me.
So the next logical step is, how do I build a kit for my areas of interest?
1. Fishing
2. Outdoors/wildlife
3. Landscapes.
4. Portrait -But, not critical, because I hate being dragged into every relative’s house to do senior pictures. Seems in the last year I’ve taken pictures for every graduation, family holiday, and special event, I ever care to do for anyone related to me. I keep telling people, “I suck.” why would you want me to take your picture. The free factor outweighs my lack of skill, I guess.Anyways, If you were to build a kit around those interests, what would it be?
Thank you Will for helping me steer to a more narrow focus, did I mention I’m Adult ADD?? Pretty sure you figured that out already.

David AndersonMemberIsn’t the D700 a full frame ??
The lens you ordered is a DX – isn’t that for crop frames ??
Would that work

David AndersonMemberThat lens by all accounts is an absolute honker, I hear they’re sharp corner to corner even at 2.8.. 😮
That would be all the wide angle you’re ever likely to need so maybe you should add a long zoom (80-200 ish) next.
Then you would have everything from 14-200 covered.
Fixed macro lenses (60 -100mm) are great for fishing stuff and don’t cost the earth as well.
Sorry, I don’t know the Nikon lenses very well, so can’t tell you what ones are better than the others.
