We are currently experiencing a pretty good population of cicadas this summer in New Zealand, making for some great dry fly fishing. While I have yet to experience one of the banner days that are occasionally encountered during the height of a cicada summer, I’ve gotten into some really good fish and enjoyed seeing and hearing the big bugs along the river. Here are some of the photos from the last couple weeks that tell the story:

Although she didn’t take a cicada, I’m sure this big girl has eaten her fair share throughout her life…

One of the craziest things about that fish was the fact that she wasn’t even the biggest that we saw in that pool…

Plenty of bugs still out, time to go get amongst it again!

That rainbow release shot looks like a Taimen swimming off. Great fish!

Y’all are crushing it, Tim. Thanks for posting. For a second there I thought Bearded Jay Malyon had snaked a ticket to NZ. Is that you? You guys should enter a Viking axe throwing contest together. 🙂

The best and most ridiculous fishing I have ever encountered was on a cicada day in the first meadow of Slough Creek in Yellowstone. That’s usually a challenging fishery and a lot of people outright strike out there. But on one day I happened to have a pattern that looked like an orange and black cicada which was coming off and I caught six fish on six consecutive casts. Have not had that happen before or since. I could have kept going but I broke the fly off on the sixth fish.

Yup, that’s me with the beard, Zach. I started growing it when I started writing my thesis hard-out. I had planned to shave it when I submitted, but that happened in August and I’ve still got the beard. I bet it was awesome to see Slough Creek when the fish were on cicadas. I’ve found that cicadas are one of those bugs that seem to make fish go a bit silly. When they’re keyed in on them you can do no wrong. It would have been awesome to see Slough like that.

Thanks David. I prefer a peacock-body PMX. They float well, have a great profile in the water, cast nicely, and most importantly, the fish smash them. That being said, there are a lot of great cicada patterns that work very well. The thing that really sets the PMX apart for me is that it is buoyant enough to hold up a decent sized tungsten bead nymph, when needed, which is something that many of the other popular cicada patterns do not do well.
