Kinda irks me that Adobe is taking this approach to future software sells. I got in on the $9.99 deal before it ended today. This really sucks because I JUST bought the LR 5 upgrade. Do you guys think the subscription only will stick?

If it does, I will be using what Adobe products I have for as long as I can, then I will be looking towards something else for my processing.

What’s the deal with this, Mike?

Zach, from what I understand, Adobe is going to stop offering their creative software for sale (except for Lightroom). To use their latest products you will have to pay a monthly subscription. At first I didn’t think I’d like a subscription but after pricing the latest LR 5 upgrade which was $85, I decided that the $9.99 subscription was a pretty good deal considering that it includes Photo Shop CC, Lightroom, Bridge CC, 20GB of cloud storage and a Behance ProSite. I don’t like using cracked software for storing and editing my images…

The $9.99 was supposed to be an offer to appease everyone that this pissed off and was only supposed to last until Dec 31, 2013. I see it’s still available on the site though so who knows.

I’m impartial to the change and see a few ticks in the plus and minus columns with a software rental model.

One of the upsides is constant inflow of new features and functions as opposed to everything at once in a new major release.

Adobe is still selling CS6 for now as well, and they are still providing updates too, so anyone nervous about the change is probably fine to wait a year (or more) and see what happens.

CC makes it easier to use your tools across multiple computers, the cloud storage is a nice feature, and I’ve also noticed that there’s an extensive tutorial library available.

I think the model will stick. It’s becoming more of an industry trend, makes it harder to pirate the IP, and allows for more rapid development cycles.

Not to mention a constant source of revenue.

I dislike being able to decide when the added features are worth the upgrade, but instead having it forced on me.

But that is the industry trend. I use CAD software at work, and they do everything they can to force the upgrades on the business. Which in my case, is a relatively small business, that can’t really afford, or need every upgrade.

I’m VERY happy with the subscription.

I was upgrading (from PS1) every 18 months to 2 years, but after switching from Canon to Nikon and then getting an additional camera and new computer, it was clear that the upgrades were never going to be as convenient as downloading.
At first the price seemed a bit much – though really about the same as a disc upgrade – but with the sale it was a bargain and MUCH easier then buying/installing a disc upgrade.

IMHO, this is a fair deal for both Adobe and the photographer.

I think Photoshop is an amazing bit of soft wear, a revolution and worth a bit of spend.

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

Yea, it’s a very fair price for both products. Adobe refunded my LR5 upgrade purchase which softened the blow quite a bit. I use LR and Nik software for 99% of what I do. Having an updated legal copy of PS for almost nothing is still pretty nice. I’m gonna try it for a year and see if I want to keep it or not.
