Could someone explain to me the difference, or pros and cons, between U.S. and Imported glass? Also, what exactly is meant by “Gray Market” gear, and is it something to be avoided?

For the neophyte buying this equipment, will it be easy to determine U.S. from Gray product? Should I look at the literature, box, or look for some identification on the body/lens?

Two well-respected online retailers, B&H Photo (http://www.bhphoto.com ) and Adorama ( http://www.adorama.com ) distinguish gray market in their item description.

Er – I think both do – I know at least one does.
