I took this photo yesterday and am trying to enhance some aspects of it. The thing I am having the most problem with is the sky in the background. Every time I try one fix, another are of the photo digitizes or I lose a lot of detail. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to fix the sky using Aperture 2.0?
    Thanks for the help.

Do you have a RAW file?

    #63050

No Sir, I do not. Taken with Nikon P&S, 6mpx.

I couldn’t get much recovery in Aperture so I did a quick round in Nikon Capture NX.

    David,
The sky and skin tones in yours look better than mine. What did you do to get the differences? I know it is a different software, but are there any similar tools? Or should I just use Aperture for storage and pick up Photoshop?
    Thanks,
    Dusty

there is not much detail in the sky… we can put another one in. I need to get aperture to see what it will do.

    Kevin,
Is the new sky complements of CS3, or did you learn Aperture real quick?

Dusty…where was that photo taken at?

    Cameron, Thanks.
That carp was caught at Lake Ray Roberts, North of the D/FW Metro. We may not have Salmonids year ’round, but we have a generous supply of almost all of the warmwater fish one could dream of. We set out early at another destination, in search of carp. But that locale was blown out, so we headed North. Found some tribs., fingers in the lake, etc. We stalked, slowly, for two hours, covering only about 200-300 yrds of shorline. Most of the Golden Bones picked us off before we even saw them; they left behind only puffs of silt. This one is small! We got into some 10+ pounders a few weeks ago. Here’s an honest truth: If you ever want to test your presentation skills, go for the Carp!

BTW-Should any of you have a strong desire for the Carp, and want to come to Dallas, I have them 300 yards behind me as I type. Also, we could drive in any direction for less than two hours and find carp in the 20-30 pound range. I do not profess to having caught them, but I do know where they are. Still working on the other part of it. Who ever thought one would need a 10 wt. on Texas’ rivers?

CS3 – I downloaded aperture last night. Good color correction but the retouch is lacking.

Dusty, I use CS3 so the following may not be avialable in Aperature but heres what I would try.

The skies a uniform colour. You should be able to select it and then try a couple things.
    1) Add a filter thats either a straight Blue or Cooling
    2) Add a new sky (not something Im very good at) and generally not something I do anyways (composites)
    3) Saturate the Blues in your Hues/Saturations
    4) Cool your WB a wee bit

The key I think would be selecting your sky so that any adjustments are not global. You should be able to that a few ways given that the sky is pretty uniform and different from the rest of the image.

    Thanks guys,
I broke down and used Photoshop;I still do not know enough about Aperture to make it useful. I adjusted the hues in the blues in the water, and it helped a lot. I will try it with the sky later. I remember a podcast discussing setting up the shot, which I need to work on more. But the replacing with another sky is something I had not even thought of.

The tutorial for aperture gives a pretty good overview. The color correction in aperture seems pretty straight forward and easy to understand. I have 30 days to play and see if I want it or not.

If you get to the point for wanting to change a sky in PS or start having issues changing out a sky, just let me know – I have to do it daily. There are a couple of good ways to do it. A quick tip… get to know your mask panel intimately…

    Dusty,

In Nikon Capture NX you can use control points and define certain areas using U-Point technology. This is also available in Photoshop using Nik Softwares Viveza. Viveza will be available for Aperture soon too.
All I did was darken the corners and add some blue on the control points in the corners of the sky, darken the corners in the foreground and added some contrast. I put a control point on you face and added a little contrast and lightened. I did the same thing in the area of the fish.

I like Aperture a lot and I would encourage you to stick with it and check out some of the plugins and editing tools that are becoming available. You can always round trip to Photoshop. The Apple Aperture site has a bunch of video Tutorials.

I got one of our creative guys to show me how to use the mask panel yesterday. It made a huge difference and was much easier than the other ways I was trying to change the image. He bumped the blues after masking the water, making it look much better.

I’ll look at the plug-ins for aperture; I also guess I need to pick up the 2.0 manual.

    Thanks y’all,

Attempt #2…Is this any better, or did I over do it?
I used the masking tool in five different areas, then adjusted the highlighted areas using the curves tool.

Looking great. I played with it during lunch today… I was showing someone that I work with how we do this stuff. He had no clue.

    Kevin,

I really like that last attempt, good job on the sky.
