Mike McKeownMemberWOW, what a great response, thank you Kevin…
I was trying to capture a bit of emotion, but I get what you’re saying. I needed to complete the story by telling it completely…
I was away for 9 fishing days and took nearly 800 photos, it is hard to find the good ones, but I have whittled it down to about 200, with about 100 more to delete. Ruthless, that all it is about… deleting the bad ones every morning, bad focus, bad composition, bad light, etc…
In every shooting session I tried to get the standard shots, but then I also tried something a little different, I like the idea of cutting the subject, I find it leaves a little to the imagination. I also like filling the frame with the subject, I have another one… see what you think…
There is a subtle difference between the 2…

Mike McKeownMemberOne last one, I know the light was not helping, but a little PS should help solve the issue… I was hiding under a Willow tree and the subject did not know I had the camera out… completely natural; I love this kind of pic…

MemberGreat photos… Looks like a great trip – I’m jealous. I love the focus on number 5 & 6. That tells what he is focusing on. “There is a fish in that hole – I just know it!” and the last shot tells it all. Great picture.
Getting rid of Bad Composition – Take a second look before deleting those images. Cropping is magical especially when taking action shots. Get the shot and crop it later.
Great work Mike.

Chad SimcoxMember#3 and #7 are the best ones. #1 is almost there, but you need a bit of the shoulder in there to ground the arm. As it is now it just looks like a floating arm hanging on to the rod.
Good job, you’ve got some nice shots there.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Mike McKeownMemberThanks guys, these are really helping, and having them come from people I respect is even better…
Cheers, this is the right kind of critic I need to improve…

MemberWe can correct the color on #7. I didn’t see that as an issue.

John BennettMemberI’m normally pretty hesitant to critique other people photos. In large part because I don’t know if a perfect photo has ever been taken and if we’re to be so inclined could nit pick photos to death and secondly because…well my photos are far from perfect 🙂
Lastly, Photography is subjective. What 1 person “dislikes” or see’s as a flaw, another may love. Its like getting two economist to agree on anything. Or in deference to Zach getting two lawyers to agree on legal opinion ;D
Over all I think they are pleasing. A few thought on a few of the images.
#3.
Really like this shot, however I think I would have preferred to see critical focus on the gent laying down trying not to spook the trout and the caster oof. He more than the caster is the story in the image…atleast to me.#5 I like
But like #3 I’d like to have seen another shot of the same with the angler in focus in the falls oof.
Not sure if it would work better, just would like to see both.#7.
Perfectly captures the moment.
It may have called for some fill flash..but thats nit picking.J

Mike McKeownMemberThanks John…
I understand what you are talking about, I am getting responses that are helping me understand what I am doing with a camera, and hopefully others are learning too…
As I said to Kevin, I doubt that I would post this question on any other board, this is a great community and people offer good advice and critique…
3. I have one with the guy lying in the grass, in focus, I thought the same that the story lies in the spotter and not the fisher…
5. I have one with the angler in focus, but it doesn’t tell as good a story, it is kind of too exact, like it was staged…
7. I had my 400mm at its full zoom, and was hidden in the trees, I agree that a fill in flash would have got much better results, but it was not to be… that was taken free-hand… I was stoked to see it sharp…
Once again thank you to the great input so far… I know I am still learning…

MemberI’m not very technical when it comes to photography, sometimes I get caught up in the moment of shooting too much to remember about my depth of field, bracketing, etc.

Mike McKeownMemberThanks Scott, all comments welcome, I just wish that Zach guy would pop a word…
I agree about the DOF, I was shooting with a long lense, but I need to figure it out… I will be playing with it this weekend.
