The Itinerant AnglerI am trying to figure out how to make the reflective studio shots work elegantly for an upcoming shoot I will be doing for a lines article.
This image isn’t bad for a first go, although I can see I didn’t get enough light bounced around the reel to light it thoroughly.

MemberBlack velvet is what you need and its cheap. If you are going to try to do a lot of still life stuff you might want to consider a soft tungsten 3200k light source instead of flash. That would solve some of your depth of field problems by allowing you to extend your exposure. Realistically bumping your ASA up is a bad idea for anything more than the web and on black you will get noise.

Ben CochranMemberJust another thought Zach. Have you thought about placing a gel on a strobe, with a snoot, and shooting it into a black reflective background so that the tight spill comes through your main subject. At the same time, snoot another white balanced strobe into your main subject and let it cast a reflection in front of the subject. I saw this done somewhere but don’t remember where it was, just remember that the images were very impressive.

I’d guess Strobist.com
A great place to pick up tips like that.

MemberI’m trying to find the Abel ad you are talking about.
When doing reflections with ps… watch the image – it should reverse the type in the reflecton if you want it “correct”. BUT in most ad and brand work they tend to ALWAYs want the logo or brand name to be right reading – personally I hate it. That is a good way to see if is natural or not.

Membermy clipping was pretty ordinary …i will look at softening the mask …I got the reflection right on the green one though the black was a bit cruddy

Chad SimcoxMemberAnother dead give away of photoshopped reflections is perspective. If you’re shooting down on something, then the reflection would be from a perspective below the object. Notice in Zach’s photo, you can see into the bottom side of the spool and reel seat. If you want to fake it properly, it’s going to require 2 shots from opposite angles.

AL – That was a compliment to your clipping mask on the black one. It is hard to do. I wish folks here could get it that close. It was a rotated reflection not a mirror was my basic comment. Some ad folks like it that way. (I cannot explain why)
I like that Abel Ad. Finally getting back to clean old fashioned olgivy ads – the product tells the story.. Nice photo as well. Is it photoshopped and to what extent? I am going to find out who did it and HOW… I’ll find the print add and I can figure it out.
