A while back I did a new website for Gary Bulla ( http://garybulla.com/ ) … and I was finally able to get down and do some fishing in Baja.

Scott Donaghe (another good IA dude here) got me the hookup with doing Gary’s website and I was able to talk him into heading down with me. Hopefully, He’ll post a few pics also.

Baja is a very visually inspiring place .. and its HOT. This time of year is mainly Dorado. I am guessing I will head back in a year or so for Roosters.

We stayed Baja Joes in La Ventana

Awesome Corey! Great photos. Looks like it was a great trip. Love the UW shots.

Completely outstanding. How’d you get the shot of the mahi – you diving in or just hanging over the side with a dome on the body?

Thanks for posting Corey. Super slick.

    Thanks Brad!
Zach: Thanks! It was a stellar trip! I jumped out of the boat to get that shot. Here are a couple shots just leaning over the side of the boat. 10mm fish with a 8″ dome.

God those are awesome, Corey. And that water color is intense. Is that one of the actual tunas in the bottom shot? I didn’t think they had false albacore/bonita on the Pacific side.

Bad ass. I love Baja, I could live there no problem. I wish I had known more about roosters when I was there a few years ago.

Jay: I agree. Baja is awesome! I would def love to spend more time down that way!

Zach: Thanks man! I agree … the water was so blue and super warm, the green colors of the Dorado really popped against the blue of the water. The bottom shot is a skipjack. We also caught one yellowfin on the trip (it was tasty!), and a couple other types of smaller tuna.

Whoa great photos. I didn’t know any part of Baja had green hills. Does that happen seasonally?

    #75286

Thanks Randy … I am not sure about the green being seasonal, but we did get a bunch of rain at night for a couple days while we were there. After the rains, in the lower desert areas, everything really colored up. The cactus started blooming, etc. I got the impression that the hill areas stayed green year round. The hilly shots were taken near El Triunfo … http://tinyurl.com/kbkj7te

Wow. Incredible stuff right there. Although have to admit that shot of the Hornitos gave me flashbacks to a, um, less responsible time in my life. Awesome report.

Thanks Ty! A trip where the only thing required of you is that you fish and have fun, is the perfect place to be a little irresponsible with the tequila. 😉

Were you fishing through an outfitter or did you hire one of the local pangas and just tell them you wanted to fly fish?

    #75293

Jay …I was fishing with Gary Bulla ( http://garybulla.com/ ) … he hires all the same local captains/guides every year. He fishes in the fall for dorado/tuna and in the spring for roosters. He also runs a kayak/camp trip down in that area once per year.

Corey, your UW shots give me lots to work for! I’m assuming you’re using a housing, but when you lean over the edge to get those shots, are you using a boom and trigger, or just hand held? I’m just getting my feet wet in underwater photography, and you seem to constantly be raising the bar.

    #75308

Brad: Thanks for the compliments! All of them are just hand held with a housing. 10mm fisheye and a 8″ dome.

Great stuff Corey! Glad to see you had a good trip. I love that underwater shot of the dorado – would make a great photo for a table of contents.

Thanks Tim! It was a stellar trip! Looking forward to going back down for Roosters at some point. 🙂

Updated with some video from the trip … The underwater footage was shot by Gary on a gopro. All the other footage was shot by me on a Samsung Note2.
