St. Mary’s Wildland fire. As I was driving up to Philadelphia, last Wednesday, I observed a forest burning in the mountains along the Blue ridge Parkway. I was running late and debated on rather I should go over and try to get some shots or not. I decided that I should just continue on my way to Philly when I noticed the next sign that read, “Vesuvius This Exit” That was enough of a sign for me as I thought that, at best, I might be able to sell some of the images to news organizations or perhaps the AP, if I got any lucky shots. News shots don’t normally pay that well but hey, money is money [ch9786]. Long and short of reality got me though as luck would have it, we shot for 15-16 hours each day and I didn’t get to review the images until today.

The fire burned for a total of 4,505 acres but it really did more good than bad. A PR person, from the Virginia Forestry said that the fire was really needed as there was a tremendous amount of undergrowth and Hardwood litter with dead and rotted Gypsy Moth, from the Beetle Kill. No homes were lost, although the fire did burn very close to a few homes, nor were any lives lost or injuries reported from the fire.

Anyway, here are a few shots that I got of the fire. It was really more of a smoker as the wind gust were very strong that day and the valleys seemed to hold the smoke down and kept any large flare ups from occurring. I know that a lot looks like smog, fog or even clouds but it was all form the actual fire. One thing that you cannot see in these photos are the mountains in the back ground that the Blue Ridge Parkway actually flows along.
