I have limited my choices down to these two Nikons. There is about a 4-500 dollar difference for the two. So, my thinking is that I get the D80 and put the money saved down on a nice piece of glass, which I believe a couple of you have recommended. But I have one concern: What will I be giving up by getting the D80 instead of the D200? That asked, it must be said that I am no where near professional, more like a hopefully soon to be serious amateur. My primary concern is the finished product, not necessarily the ease and speed of the camera body.

    Your opinions?

If you go to http://www.nikonians.org you’ll find in depth reviews and comparisons between the two cameras.

You might be able to buy a D200 or D2Xs cheap now used because a lot of photographers are moving up to a D300 or D3.

I have thought about the used avenue, but I have friend who is a pro, and he is adamant about not buying used gear from someone you do not know. I guess I kind of adopted that philosophy as well. But now, I may be back on the Canon side. Evidently, the 40D is 14 bit while the D80 is 12 bit. I only vaguely understand this concept, but it seems that this has an effect on final image results.

Maybe I am putting too much thought into all of this, especially as I seem to wafer with each new sun. Just wanna make sure the grand I end up giving away is worth what I get. So please, keep the info flowing.

The D300 is 14 bit and I think it is the hottest selling DSLR right now. I shoot for a living and I can understand you being leery of used gear. I can say that everything I have bought used from reputable dealer has worked out well. I would by a D300 or D3 in a heartbeat if I had a really good reason! I shoot mostly medium format digital.
