    Matt,

I fished with a guide on the Naknek a few years ago named Mark Emery. He’s the guru when it comes to underwater videography of salmon. He does a lot of underwater stills as well. Check his website for his impressive creds. I emailed him just last week to inquire about fishing this summer. He’s filming right now for Nat Geo. I dunno if he’ll give any tips but his website is fun to look at. Maybe book a fishing trip and pick his brain. He guides out of King Salmon from June to September and Ocala FL during winter.

    My 2c
Pick up a Pentax WP for about $300.00. Small enough to fit in a pocket, good enough for the shots your DSLR cant do, cheap enough not to worry about it, no fussing about with housing etc.

Here is what i am going to pick up for some underwater photography this summer…

Canon G9 (12 Megapixels!, RAW shooting capabilities, superb image quality) wide angle adapter (24mm) and Canon underwater housing. Total cost, about $600. I’ll let you all know how it goes.

Well, I was actually planning on having the camera sit on the bed of the river and using a remote to release the shutter.

My experience with the Pentax and Olympus Point and Shoot “water proof” cameras has been dismal, (both failed).

The problem for point and shoot is that I have to physically hold the camera and take pictures.

But are you sure your wireless remote is going to work underwater, Matt?

The problem for point and shoot is that I have to physically hold the camera and take pictures.  What I want to do is have a wireless remote set up so I can leave the camera submerged… I would be on the bank snapping shots away, allowing the fish to swim freely and undisturbed.

I missed that, I agree, I think you’ll need an ike housing with a pc port for a cable trigger or a cable fed manual release, or high end digital.

Your camera uses an N3 wired remote, most of these are only a couple of feet…. perhaps 3-6.. you might find a custom…

Another Idea, and again this is coming from a Nikon guy not a canon guy… so los caveat emptor.

But.. I’ve used my sony UX180 and my little mac connected to a very long USB cable to monitor and capture elusive critters…

Here we go…I found a 33′ extension cable for the remote.

For shallow water images, a good old fish aquarium works great.
