MemberI am about to buy a new Kayak. I torn between the Coosa Or the Cuda. Can anyone tell me why I should pick one over the other. It will be used mostly in small ponds and on the White River and Little Red River. I will be using bass tackle and spinning rods mostly but also fly fishing for trout. Which one would you suggest and why??

MemberBilly,
If you’re going to be on the river more than 50% of the time, go with the Coosa, as it has a rocker that will do better in the moving water than the Cuda. If you’re going to be in the pond or other flat water more than 50% of the time, go with the Cuda, as it has a flatter bottom.
The Coosa is our River boat, the Cuda is our solo lake/pond boat.
That said, either will work fine if you’re going to do both, it is just that the Coosa will turn better in the moving water and the Cuda will track better in the flat water.
Have you looked at the Kilroy? A sit in (vs. sit on top) boat that is very stable. It might be the boat that would do both very well.

Bob RigginsMemberCraig is exactly right in his analysis. Coosa is short (11’2″) with a higher rocker, Cuda (I assume you mean the Cuda 12) is longer (12’6″) but still has adequate freeboard. Coosa has a little more capacity 375# vs 350#. I may be prejudiced toward longer boats since I have 15 footers for saltwater flats, but the longer Cuda 12 will be faster, track better and still be manuverable enough for river fishing.

MemberSuperfishal. 🙂 I’ve had several Jackson kayaks an so far the Superfishal is hands down my favorite small boat for fly fishing.

Eric WellerMemberBilly,
I was in the same boat (get it) as you. I opted for the Kilroy, which I feel was much better than the other two. I love mine and have been happy ever since.Eric

MemberI have a Kilroy too. Cool boat but I still give the SUP the advantage for Fly fishing due to the stability, ability to stand and cast facing any direction, and maneuverability.
Here is how I’ve rigged mine.

The Kilroy.

Billy HarrisMemberI bought a Coosa. I like it, but my next purchase will be either a SUP or Kilroy.
When the going gets tough, the tough go fishing.

The Itinerant AnglerMike that’s a cool way you have your ride rigged there. My experience with SUPs has been that they are kinda barge-y when it comes to maneuvering in moving water. But for a still tailwater they would be ideal; might let you sneak up quietly on fish in the fall when they’re on the shoals.
