MemberI bit the bullet and ordered a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 16-80 F3.5-4.5. I needed something in that range to replace the Sony kit lens and this one just seems to be getting the best feedback of them all.

MemberI’ve used Zeiss on Hasselblad and Contax cameras my entire career and they are awesome sharp and very smooth tonally. The only lenses that might compare are Leica lenses. I don’t know anything about the particular lens you ordered but Zeiss has a great reputation.

MemberGot the lens last night but I had to sign for it so it was dark when I picked it up… The overall feel is much different then the China kit lens. The Zeiss is MUCH heavier and just feels like quality. My kit lens and the other 70-300 POS kit lens go on Ebay this week.
I’m finally starting to warm up to the Sony and I think I’ll be happy with my lens selection until I have a need for a high speed 300mm. I don’t see that need anytime soon.
I’ll post some pics with the Zeiss as I get them.Dec 14, 2007 at 3:55 am #62273yuhina
MemberMike,
I do not know how they design these new series of lens. As soon as they still use the Vario-Sonar, Distagon, Plannar, I would assume they still use the old design. Well, in my opinion (pretty strong actually), I would say using the Contax lens (Zeiss) is just like nymphing with pheasant tail, they give me 100% confidence and never fail me.

Memberonce to resize them. Other then that I didn’t touch them or use any filters to be fair to the lens (I’m not bragging just wanted a fair lens review). IMO it’s heads and shoulders above the kit and I’m finally happy with the results.
The last two were in there from a report on my board. The light was really bad but the back drop was cool. Any suggestions on how to handle a shot like this? Would a Pol filter have made that much diff?

MemberLooks like a really good lens! Where did you shoot the misty mountain scene? I like the chimney and outhouse too. Its to bad there was no fog for that shot.

MemberMike, these are looking great, a whole lot better than those shots with the kit lens were.

MemberThanks Carter. Actually Sony is offering the Zeiss as the kit lens with the new A700’s. I hear there is an A900 in the works too. Maybe Sony is going to become a formidable player in the DLSR business? I’m enjoying being on the front end and getting the less known, lower priced equipment.
They finally dropped the price a little on the big flash and I ordered it Thursday. I played around with some indoor stuff at a family get together with a 50mm f1.7 last week without a flash and they turned out great. That little lens is pretty sweet. I haven’t been at this long but from what I’ve read about Minolta they made some pretty good glass back in the day (Japan). I’m happy with the results so far and I haven’t broken the bank yet. I also don’t have any shots like John Bennett’s Blue jay either. That photograph haunts me.
