The Itinerant Angler
I know I’ve come in for some criticism recently for sharing things I’ve had published but this is a big deal for me and I wanted to put it up here.
That’s my first cover shot. I set up the pic and snapped a few shots and then Ian Crabtree kindly offered to take one of me (so Ian gets credit too). We had a great trip last August to the Henry’s Fork, to Flat Creek (pictured above) and to Yellowstone. We’ve had images published from each of those locations and there’s one more waiting to go out, which I expect to be in the Scott catalog coming soon. I’ve held that one. It’s always nice to have a successful trip from both a fishing and photography standpoint. I know those of us who have felt the pressure to produce will understand that.

Ben CochranMemberYou have always promoted an atmosphere, in this site, so that anyone and everyone can brag about their accomplishments and achievements. It is one of the things that makes this place so enjoyable and fun, for many wanting to help others, professional and recreational alike. You are no exception to this Zack and I hope that you do not allow one person to make you feel that you are not just as welcome and human in wanting to share things, which you consider important, with the rest of us, the 99.99 % :).
Having said this: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Outstanding cover shot and it is one of those deals that serves us for a lifetime of great memory. Anyone and everyone would feel great about making a cover, especially when the photographer managed to get their good side. LOL.. Sorry, had to be the first to poke you on that one. 🙂

The Itinerant AnglerThanks guys. Cover shots eluded me for the longest time (and likely still will). While the photos are usually technically fine, there always seems to be some issue with how they lay out or what not. The truth is 90% of covers for fly fishing magazines come from the same people, with establish (and deserved) reputations. I know at least some of those folks have “pet fish” they photograph, but not all. Guys like Grossenbacher and O’Keefe really impress the hell out of me because of the diversity of their work, still hitting ‘cover quality,’ more than other who have basically figured out a workable formula, excellent though their photos may also be.

Bob RigginsMemberOnce you break through the barrier of getting one published, you become “one of those guys”. Same as getting an article published. I bet the next one is easier.

Great cloudage, light and location for a cover ..

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

The Itinerant AnglerThanks all. Bob I hope you are right. One thing this did was remind me that in certain circumstances I need to go full-res and use RAW. They took that shot from the center of a horizontal pic and it could be sharper (although it’s acceptable — I’ve seen the print now).

John BennettMemberGrats Zach, the first is always special. 🙂
No idea why you feel as though you can’t, or shouldn’t share things that get published.I know those of us who have felt the pressure to produce will understand that.
It can take the fun away from it and then some.
Frame it (the issue, not just a tear sheet) and hang it.
