Jay Malyon and I are trying to dial in overnight fishing. The idea is to drop lights in the water and draw in a baitball, then back the boat away from our light and fly-cast to it. In the mean time we’ll have bait rigs out so as to measure our success and go home with some fish. I’ve done this very successfully in Arkansas (although I wasn’t in charge), and on a good night you can catch well over 40 fish – many of which can be nice stripers.

So anyway we put in about 9:30PM on Friday, the night before the Super Moon.

This is Jay’s awesome boat, which he basically assembled through Craigslist and business skill.

I brought my Weber Smokey Joe and grilled/smoked some chicken for about three hours. It took a while to get going.

Jay was not wild about all the open flames on the front of his boat when I was wielding the charcoal starter.

The weather was somewhat uncooperative. We had wind and clouds at first – wind is bad, clouds are good. Then the clouds broke and we ended up on a still night with the brightest moon like ever. I could definitely see a decrease in the size of our baitball.

We never did rig my buoy on this trip, but we’ll do it properly some time in the future. We managed one small striper and this surprise walleye!

It was right at five pounds on my boga and is currently residing in my freezer waiting for a tying night with Jay.

We also listened to Coast to Coast, which is the craziest radio show of all time. Here’s the episode we were on when the dude started talking about the Puerto Rican Chupacabra:

This is how we listened to the story of the chupacabra:

Overall it was a super fun trip. Driving home at 3AM is the worst part – next time we’re going to just camp on an island so we can crash and drive back in the daylight.

Zach, I thought about picking up some LED lights when I was at Basspro today. Holly would have killed me. Anywho, I’d like to do some night fishing this summer with lights. I’d definitely camp out on an island, though.

I’m not seeing to many good reviews, though. Are you happy with your lights? I have some spare plywood from all the construction we’ve been doing and a few life jackets that could be put to good use on a contraption similar to what you built.

    Hey Mike –

Life jackets would work, so would sheet foam. Don’t use an inflatable, I learned that. My lights are pretty darn bright. I am happy with them. They were the 18″ tubes sold by Bass Pro.

I just realized I have insulation board that would work great. I’m going to convince holly we need this. 😉

What size batter did you go with?

Mike I used a trolling motor battery.
