Summertime Stripes – Rolling TR

Been a pretty slow early summer for river stripers. Northwest Georgia has seen more than its usual share of rain this year, making it tough to find some decent water temps and clarity. I had some success back in the spring locally and in some East Georgia rivers, and have really been trying to figure it out in this geographic neck of the woods recently.

My first love is the fly but sometimes you just have to find where they are first. I had touch of success a few weeks ago on some calmer stained water throwing some some plastic baits with an in line spinner. Water was still cool and I caught an unlikely by catch too.

After a few more fruitless days, I had an opportunity to go out with a great guide Cy Grajcar to fish a small window of decent water up near Rome. I jumped at the chance. We caught a multitude of neat fish, mostly on minnows. Water was pretty darned stained but we made a great day out of it. My buddy Robert caught a really nice fish and I was really happy to enjoy that catch with him.

Like I said, I really live for catching big stripe on big flies. Fate and preparation smiled upon me when I went out on a great paddle trip south of the city with my friends Jay and Doug a couple weeks back. Kudos to Jay on some of the picture credits. We met a new friend who was kind enough to show us around his home waters, and when he asked if he could have some of our catch for dinner, we were happy to oblige. Really made that man’s day, possibly month!

Holy cow what a hard day, I seem a little disheveled after the catch.

Alas, rain and troubled waters kept me away from fish for a few more days.

Then the sun briefly came back out and I got a few more on the fly. Feeling back to my normal self.
