MemberI sent my Dynatran Tripod back to Amvona for a full refund and got my ebay Bogan 3021 legs with a 3055 head. All I can is the Dynatran was a toy compared to the Bogen. One of the carbon fiber legs on the DT broke on its second trip out. This after the head had to be sent back after I opened the package. Lots of rust starting to set in too. In short the DT is just another China made POS.
The Bogen is big heavy beefy and I get excited just looking at it. I LOVE good engineering and build quality and this thing reeks of both. I know I don’t have to tell you guys how good Bogen is. But I looked here for advice when I bought the DT so I thought I post this and maybe save the next guy what I had to go through. I paid $20 more for a used Bogen in excellent condition and I’m 100% positive it’ll last longer on this earth then I do. The DT,,, not so much.

Steve K.MemberWow Mike….I was surprised to see this. No doubt the DT is cheaply built but my experience has been just the opposite. It’s been on four (4) backcountry trips with me (YNP, Beartooths, GSMNP (twice) with no problems. After reading your post I checked mine thoroughly. No visible signs of failure. Of course when you go to the Bogen you almost double the weight your carrying…..which is the primary reason I bought mine. Tripod and head together at three (3) pounds. This is extremely important to me when hiking 8 to 10 miles a day. I have a tripod that is of much higher quality than the DT but it (DT) can’t be beat for weight as long as it remains functional. I would NOT recommend the DT for anything other than lightweight backpacking. For that application it’s my first choice.
If anyone knows of a quality tripod/head combination under three pounds please let me know.

MemberDrifter I might have gotten a lemon but like I said the head was broken right out the package (threads stripped and it looked used). Dealing with customer service was a pain at Amvona, i.e. 15 to 20 min wait each time to get with a real person. Then when the leg broke they told me 4 times I would have to talk to Jimmy somebody and they would have him call me. Four times (four days) he never called. Finally they just put me on hold forever (no answer). So I called and tried the BUY NEW AMVONA PRODUCT option and got right thru… Ohh and guess who answered…. Yep ole Jimmy himself. He promised I’d get my refund but it aint over yet and I suspect I’ll have to remind them they awe me $100.
That was my first experience with this company and DT so yea I got a sour taste in my mouth from it. I’m slowly learning that even the so called high end stuff that comes from China isn’t worth the cardboard it’s wrapped in.
I’ve replaced both China kit lenses for my camera for Japan Prosumer lenses from 20 years ago and the difference is amazing. There’s some good glass out there and it can be had for = < what the new inferior kits lenses cost.Nov 4, 2007 at 7:20 pm #61993
Steve K.MemberYa know…I haven’t heard Zach comment on his since he acquired it a month or so ago. He may have already trashed his as well. 🙂

MemberWell it seems I’m not alone in my opinion. One of these days I’ll learn to investigate everything and everyone on google before buying anything!

I fully expect I’ll have to get my credit card company involved to get a refund.Nov 6, 2007 at 12:57 am #61995fred krow
MemberI have been using a Bogen 3021 since the early 1990’s, it does not have the Bling of the Gitzo however it is sturdy and reliable.

MemberNot sure if this helps- but thought I would add food for thought- I’ve been using a Slik AMT 500 DX with a Manfrotto head.
Very sturdy/relatively light legs/ basic well built locks and controls. Outside of

The Itinerant AnglerI have not trashed mine, it is holding up well, but I sort of saw going into this that this was going to be a limited use tripod.

MemberNice photo Zach and what a handsome fellow. 😎
That was my best fish ever on a #20. That’ll be a tough one for me to beat.
