MemberThat’s going to take a beast of a machine to process output from a camera like that. I can’t even imagine what storage requirements would be like for a pro photographer using a camera like that. Hopefully I’ll have a terabyte hard drive in my computer by the time a camera like that rolls out.

MemberRob Galbraith has a report on a visit to Canon’s corporate offices and their strategies over the next several years where he mentions the processor.

Of interest to me was the Highlight Tone Priority feature that will be coming out on the highend EOS-1D Mark III’s. One of the things that digital imaging cannot come close to as does film is the “ability to maintain detail and enhance gradation in bright areas.” Of course this is all on their pro equipment, but it will be fun to watch where this goes down the road with consumer grade products.
Canon is also toying with the idea of a new file format. Yikes! Just what we need.

This is so true – and one of the only aspects of digital photography that I don’t like. I haven’t read that report, Scott, and I appreciate the link. It’s also why I use two different RAW processors – ACR for 90 percent of my work and Capture One Pro, which handles the sun and steep tonal gradations much like film. Still, it falls short and I am happy to hear someone is a) acknowledging it and b) doing something to improve it.
If this sensor sees the light of day in DSLRs, they probably need to come up with new lenses.

MemberI read an article in one of my mags at home that talked about alot of the wedding photogs and journalists are not going to the newest high megapixel pro-bodies by canon and nikon because they don’t need the extra megapixels for their work, and the file sizes simply slow them down to much.

MemberI fully agree Eric – I can see the use of this stuff in studio situations with direct downloads as you shoot for billboard sized images, but 10 -12 mp is all you’ll ever need for magazine work. They need to focus on detail now and finer tuning.

David AndersonMemberThere’s already a 49 MP medium format back out – the Phase one P45.
I’ve seen some shots with it done on a Hasselblad and all I can say is WOW !
Sure it’s more than you need for the mags but still has a place in the business.
Pictures from this set-up have a certin ‘glow’ like a 4’x5′ tranny that you get close to but never quite reach on even the best 35mm digital.I’ve also been looking at Alpa cameras with the new digital designed wide lenses and 30 MP backs from Leaf – again the quality is just wicked, you can almost smell a picture from one.
Mind you I wouldn’t want to take a $40,ooo back ( camera not included

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.
