Lots of good photographers on here.
Overall I like it. I like the way the space between the trees leads me into the picture. It makes me wonder what is ahead of the little girl. Although it looks like you have already cropped quit a bit, if you have the pixels, I believe I would crop just a bit off of the bottom and top, especially the top, as I think the little girl tends to get lost.
I would try to bring down the highlights in the trees and lighten the little girl to draw the eye to her.
I think you could crop more of th bottom to emphasize the scale of the child in relation to the forest.

I agree…I would like her to “pop” a little bit more but I am struggling in accomplishing that without photoshop.

I’m not sure how your converting to b/w, as it sounds like you don’t have the shop, but if you have a way of manipulating the RGB channels that are getting plugged into the b/w, i think you could adjust the contrast and tones to get more pop in the image. This easily done with the channel mixer adjustment layer, set to monochrome in the shop.

Some cameras have B&W capabilities in camera.
Take a close look at Capture NX. The U-Point Technology is very cool and you really don’t need to go into Photoshop unless you want to do cloning etc. I have been working on NEF JPEG and TIFF files in NX and it works really well. The workflow is photographer centric and for the money I think its one of the best pieces of software available. There is a full function 30 day trial available from Nikon. I spend a lot of time in Photoshop and used the Lightroom beta, by the time you add it all up the cost of both programs is nearly a Grand. I think if you are serious about Photography you pretty much have to have Photoshop but if you are looking for something that is streamlined and offers intuitive creative controls Capture NX is hard to beat. I have been working my way through a set of DVDs called Unleashing The Power Of Cature NX by Vincent Versace. I would recommend them to anyone who is trying to improve their photograhic skills. The guy shoots great pictures, check it out.

Right, but most of them are set up to give you the same results as using the desaturate command in photoshop – which can be ok, but alot of times the results are bland.
