Steve K.MemberNeed some input from you all………….
I’m looking for a compact, lightweight photo storage option for the times I’m on the road (or trail, or water) and don’t want to lug the laptop along. I also like the option of being able to view the photos as well. I’m seriously considering the Epson P-5000 (80 gig storage capacity). Retails for $680 on Amazon. Supports RAW, fast download, 4 inch screen……

Also looking at the Archos products as well.
Anyone have any experience or recommendations? Thanks in advance.

MemberDrifter,
I played with the Epson a couple of times and it’s pretty cool, but expensive.

MemberHonestly, i would think if you are will to pay almost $700 for somthing that only gives you a 4″ screen, pay a couple hundred more and get a small laptop (12″ or less) and then you can view them at a decent size, edit them, and whatever else you want.

Steve K.MemberEric….You do have a point! Might be time to shop for a small Mac.
JP….I’ll check the sites you’ve mentioned.
Thanks for the input!

MemberI just saw a guy at panera bead with a 12″ dell, it was pretty sweet.

MemberI have a 12 inch Dell that I use for my daily news work. Thing takes up no space and has a decent screen.
The 12 inch iBooks are sweet too.

Steve K.MemberThanks guys. Actually the Epson (or laptop) would not go into the backcountry with me. I would download once I got back to the lodge/hotel. I’m attracted to the Epson because of it’s size obviously….I can stick it in my pocket or carryon whereas, a laptop would require some sort of briefcase or backpack. I like to travel light and something similar to the Epson would allow me to that. In the big scheme of things, the laptop would be more practical even if it is more bulk. I read on Luminous Landscape where one of the members that just returned from Anarctica (sp?) used two (2) p-4000s as opposed to a larger laptop for the reasons I mention.
Thanks again for everyone’s input.
Another option is to get a P-2000 or 3000. Less capacity but less cost also!

MemberDoes anyone know if the iPod Photo could fit the bill. If there is a way to transfer images from the camera to the iPod without a computer it could be ideal. You could have a portable hard drive and some music to boot. Just a thought.
Quick search found this:

Wasn’t needing one of these, but now that you got me thinking ::)……thanks Drifter.

MemberScott,
I use my Ipod for backup storage of images when I travel.Mar 23, 2007 at 8:17 pm #61278scott donaghe
MemberThanks Malcom. Bummer that you cannot view RAW images though. I never travel without my iPod for music. In fact every night at Pesca Maya this past summer we used it as a jukebox by tapping into the lodges stereo. The poor owner (Rogelio) was not always overly excited by the mixes of music that came out, but several of the guests would borrow the iPod to keep them company until all of the cold beer was properly dispatched.

Memberyeah, $700 for what amounts to 80G of storage is ridiculous no matter how you cut it.

MemberSince I can’t imagine reviewing photos on the trail or water, I’m limiting my thoughts to being “on the road”.

MemberI used an iPod for my keys trip last year. It worked great but was really slow (1meg cards). I had to recharge it after every card :-[. I’m using 4 meg cards now and don’t think the charge will last that long.
If you can find a cable that runs the ipod off AC during download it would be almost usable. This year I extended my stay to make is reasonable to bring my computer ;DMar 24, 2007 at 12:53 am #61282Carter Simcoe
MemberDo most chargers not run the ipod off AC during download?

Steve K.MemberI stopped by Best Buy this evening and glanced at their laptops. I saw a 12″ Toshiba that was pretty small with cd and DVD rewrite capabilities for $799. I’m ignorant when it comes to Apple products and would like to consider them as well. Can someone recommend a small Ibook model for this application (travel, photo editing/storage, etc.)?

MemberApple doesn’t exactly offer a multitude of models.

When I hook my ipod to my desktop Mac I can charge and download.
When I download directly from my CF cards (via a CF reader) to the ipod there is no charger/power supply (at least not one avail last year) – every thing is running off the ipod.
