My wife is a pro photographer and is giving me one of her D70s. Assuming I play my cards right, what lens should I ask to borrow? She has a bunch of them and couldn’t begin to tell you which ones.

Also, what do you all put your camera in when you go to the river? Will a large ziplock suffice or should I get some waterproof bag? Sorry.New to photography, my wife always takes the pictures.

    Seth,

First let me offer a disclaimer….I am not an expert. There are folks on here with much more experience than me. With that said…..I also take a D70s with me when I fish. I use the Simms Rool Top Bag when I’m actually in the water….otherwise I keep my gear in an Pelican case or Lowepro Dryzone backpack. Here’s a photo of the Simms Bag:

As far as a lens…..if you only want one…..you probably want a little versatility. Wide angle and some zoom capability. I’d suggest and 18-70mm 0r an 18-200mm with VR. The 18-200 would allow you to take some “grip and grin” photos of ugly guys holding dead fish 🙂 ….and you would have the capablity to reach out with the 200mm end to photograph that eagle that landed in the tree or the grizzly that is working the far side of the river. Of course if it was me….I’d have to ask her for her 12-24mm and her 70-200mm F2.8 🙂 Oh…and also grab her carbon fiber Gitzo tripod on your way out the door.

Drifter…the D70s actually fits in that Simms Rolltop Bag?

I have a D70 and it doesn’t fit in the camera bag.  When I’m on the water I use the Simms Dry Creek Roll top lumbar pack.  I have also attached the Roll-Top Camera Bag to the belt of the lumbar pack.  I carry my camera and attached lens in the lumbar pack and use the camera bag to carry a polarizing filter, lens cloth and other accesories.  You can fit an extra prime lens in the camera bag, but most zoom lenses are even a tight squeeze in it.

Originally I was going to buy the Ortlieb Aqua Zoom http://www.ortlieb.com/_prod.php?lang=en&produkt=aquazoom.  I wasn’t able to find it at the time I bought the Simms though.

I’d vote for the 18-200 DX VR. It’s the only lens I take in my skiff. When running Its packed in a Pelican 1300 case. Case holds a D200 w/lens, filters, extra battery, extra memory, lens wipes, etc.

In following up the original question with a secondary one…what about padding?

I am looking at the Simms Dry Creek back pack for carrying my DSLR.
