    Hi guys,

I’m in the market for a Nikon D80. I’ve been shopping around for a while now trying to find the best priced kit since I need lenses and everything else. So far the best deals I’ve found are on eBay but different guys are selling different lenses made by different manufacturers.

So what’s the differance between the Nikkor, Sigma, and Tamron lenses? Should I buy only Nikkor? Should I just stay away from eBay? And do I need to get a macro lens to photograph my flies on the bench?

    Joe,

The Nikkors are generally considered to be superior lenses, but you pay a premium for them.

Two considerations when it comes to 3rd-party lenses:

    1) There are always good and bad copies when it comes to particular lens models. But you are getting more uniformity when you stick with Canon, Nikon, etc. You might get a great Sigma, Tokina, Tamron copy that is good as the major manufacturer, but your chance of getting stuck with a dog are much greater.

    2) Resale. Canon, Nikon lenses hold their value much better if you ever decide to sell later. With 3rd party lenses, you WILL take a loss, regardless of how well you have taken care of it.

    What Matt said!

If I were shopping for a new body and lens setup right now and didn’t have any lenses I’d take a hard look at the D80 and 18-200mm VR combo.

    That 18-200VR is da bomb!

Can’t go wrong with the Nikon 18-200mm VR. Its a great lens and only a little larger than the 18-70mm Nikon. I use it 99% of the time.
