Ok… maybe I do need a long-range zoom lens

Out fishing today with two friends and we came upon a bunch of rising fish. What a great chance to take some pictures of rising fish. Alas the D50 18-55mm kit lens wasn’t quite up to the task.

This was the best I was able to come up with. (Cropped very tightly)

Two questions:
1) What would be an ideal zoom lens for a 30-50 foot range?
2) How would you give a sense

The standard is the 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR, but that’s a very expensive lens.

Here is what I have, and I am extremely happy with both…

70-200 2.8 VR – perhaps the best lens Nikon has ever made.

300 f4 AFS – love it.

I owned the 80-400 VR years ago and overall, I liked the lens – but it did have some flaws that irritated me greatly. First of all, the VR really works. If only they could have made that lens with both VR and as an AFS. It focused sooooo slow and often had trouble locking focus on a subject.
