Has anybody on this forum ever heard of/used The GIMP for photo editing?

    http://www.gimp.org

It’s similar in capability to Photoshop, but it’s open source (like Firefox, etc.) so it’s free and always being improved. Mostly because I’m excited by open source software, and because it’s free, I’ve started using it and have been liking it a lot. There is certainly a learning curve from Photoshop (which I used to use quite a bit) and JASC Paint Shop Pro (which I’ve been using at work for the past two years and still dislike) but it seems to have a lot of potential. The basic stuff, like cropping, resizing, etc. is all pretty easy from the get-go.

    Cheers.

ps – Just because I realized this post might read like an advertisement, let me just say I have absolutely no connection whatsoever to the software or the organization that creates it.

All of us open source guys have been trying to get GIMP the attention it deserves for years.  While the learning curve on GIMP is a bit more steep than Photoshop, once you get the hang of it the program has just as many capabilities as Photoshop without the bulk and resource hogging.

The best part, it is distributed, as you said, for free in almost all major, and most minor, linux distributions.

I can give you some good sites with info, tips, and tricks for GIMP if you want.
