Jeff SmithMemberI have one cape. I can’t recall where I got it. Bought it many, many moons ago. I use it sparingly as I haven’t seen much for sale in recent years.
It is pretty cool stuff to tie with from a nostalgic point. Adds a certain touch of class to streamers. I have used some larger eyes as wings as well as the mottled feathers along the side of the cape.May 24, 2012 at 11:20 am #59194Jon Conner

MemberJungle Cock … Are you happy with what you have or would you recommend going up or down a class …
;D 😉 ::)
I don’t own any but it is awesome to see it at the shows when the old school guys tie up beautiful flies with the stuff. Â

JCNot a big fan of buying my fly tying stuff on ebay, esp something that can cost mucho bucks.
JC is one of those things that I like to see/handle prior to purchasing. the eyes are prone to splitting, a problem I already have as my cape is old and has been handled lots. While easy to fix, I prefer to buy stuff un-damaged.
Split nails are certainly something that you need to keep in mind, regardless of source, esp for a first time purchaser.

The Itinerant AnglerBe careful where you buy it, I was told by a reliable F&G source that some are being imported illegally and getting confiscated.

MemberThe only place I’ve found it recently is eBay. Little river outfitters and blue ribbon flies never have it when I look and they are two of the best shops for flytying materials in existence. The guy selling most of the capes on eBay is in an eastern European country and not sure it is imported properly or legally, so it is a gamble.
You can do a google search and buy domestic from a few shops online, but paying $200 or more for a cape you haven’t seen in person is risky too.

Justin WittMemberI used to have a cape and always used it for eyes on big Ken Abrames style flatwings for saltwater stripers. Â Somehow it got lost in the move. Â But check with John Kelsey – he usually has this kind of thing for sale:

Or, I’ll go in halves with you on one of the live birds, as long as we can keep it at Zach’s house (I’m sure he won’t mind), and he can just pluck it every once in a while and mail us the feathers.

MemberI’ve got a cape and a half left. Only tie out of it when I have to have a few certain patterns in my box. Byron at LRO used to have them but hasn’t been able to locate one for me in several years. Seems they were around $120 back then.
Hard to find for sure, especially with the sight unseen ways of the web.
